My newest attempt at learning Ukrainian is translating beginner stories in Dutch to Ukrainian. You see, I used to study speech-language therapy and I've done several internships where I worked with children with learning dissabilities and developmental disorders. I have a collection from that time of stories for children who are just starting out learning to read Dutch.

What I do is take one of these stories (they're from kleuteridee.nl):

And try to write them in Ukrainian:

Що це? Це риба Риба тонка? Риба жирна!

Риба є в акваріум? Риба на сковороді? Риба в мішку Як смішно

Риба в акваріум з гілкою Акваріум тече Це тупо!

I finished unit 7 - Use basic numbers!

Vocabulary

The most important thing in this unit was the numbers of course. Basic numbers are pretty easy once you understand the patterns. But it does still take a bit for me to remember numbers between 10 and 20 again, they're longer words which I still struggle with a bit.

Other than that, I learned рік (year), мені теж (me too) and вже (already).

Grammar

In duolingo I got a very basic introduction to the genitive form. рік becomes років when you want to say for example "sixteen years" (шістнадцять років). It reminds me a bit of French: instead of saying "I am x years old", you say "I have x years". However! numbers 2 - 4 have a different effect. It's два роки, три роки, чотири роки.

Outside of duolingo, I got some help with grammatical gender from some people on tumblr. Дуже дякую!! 💖

Pronounciation

Speaking of help, I got help from a friend and that friend's friend on the way я is pronounced in words like дев'ять, десять and одинадцять! I'm very grateful for all the help 🥰

The next unit will be about large numbers. It seems I will also learn how to talk about money 👀 I still want to know more verbs, but I don't think next unit will give me that. I'm still excited though!

I finished unit 3 on duolingo! These were the things that stuck with me the most:

I learned words for family members, even wrote it down on paper:

I learned some animals! The one I keep forgetting is ведмідь (bear), and the word for animals (-> title) 😅

Grammar

I learned the declension of possessive pronouns!!🎉 For example:

ваш - ваша - ваші

And I learned how to use the construction у мене є

All in all, this unit seemed to fly by! The thing I want to learn the most now is new verbs. I only know пити, їсти, хочу and має, and I picked up спати, думаю and виглядає from my friend, but I'd like to learn some more! I'm also excited for the numbers I'll learn in the next unit!!

Today I focused on present tense - теперішній час

There are two conjugations. I'm not 100% sure how to determine which verb follows which, but I'm guessing it has something to do with whether the infinitive ends with -ити or not?

Aaand I finished unit 2!! What I will carry with me the most from this unit are

the small talk phrases

"у" means in/at, it's very important to know!! Prepositions are the most difficult for me in any language, even in my native language, so I have to be attentive to them!

"що" and "як" both mean "what", but I don't know what the difference is, I'm going to try to figure that out

What I lack the most currently, is knowing how pronouns work. I understand it a bit, but I'd like a more explicit way of learning for this. In fact, I'll google it now and write them down.
