"Umm..." Noah was confused, creasing his eyebrows. There wasn't a sound of partying anywhere nearby, so witnessing this drunken girl stumbling toward him on the streets was puzzling. "Are you alright?"

"Well, is this not a pleasant surprise..." Noah cooed as he turned to his ex-girlfriend. Despite how sour things had ended months ago, he was genuinely happy to bump into her in this store. He'd been in a rush at first, running into said store for a disposable camera. It was the day of his boss' 34th wedding anniversary, and Noah was dressed formally. That was about the only thing that made him slightly embarrassed. "I promise, this isn't what it looks like," He said, juggling the camera in his hands awkwardly. "How.. How are you? How have you been?"
"You're okay, it was just a bad dream."
This is exactly why Noah didn't like sleeping with other people. Nightmares. For some people, they came swiftly, and left an hour or so after. For Noah, for some reason, he had enough memories to last him nightmares for a lifetime. Usually, he was good with not sleeping; he was okay with staying up or sleeping for a few hours. However, tonight was a bit different. He found a lovely woman at a bar, who invited him to try out her comfy bed. It was a shallow invitation, one Noah was usually good at rejecting. Again, things went rather differently. He accepted her offer. Why not, right? She was an attractive woman, he was an attractive man, they were both slightly intoxicated, what more could two consenting people ask for?
Yes, they could probably ask for more history on one another. After a few hours of sex, the two fell asleep, and Noah drifted into his dreams of misfit reality. Warped reality, should be noted. Noah MacKenzie was a rather anxious person. No one could really see that, he was good at hiding it. Yet when he fell asleep, that's when it became most obvious. His face would twitch, his arms would jolt, his legs cramped, and he began to speak his native tongue. Chinese. It was the language his mother spoke, or rather, the only language she spoke. His memories would recall him to the times he'd been yelled at, and the young boy who would respond in nothing but apologies.
So, yes, as he sat beside the woman in the dimly lit bedroom on her comfy bed, Noah was a bit humiliated. As comforting as she was, as nice as she was being, the guy was still embarrassed. One night, just one night, he thought he'd be tired enough to stay asleep. And he figured wrong. It was so like him to assume the best in himself. He should've known better. "I apologize for waking you, I probably should have told you I'm--" The lack of phrasing created those pause, once again, he became embarrassed. Noah didn't know what the hell he was. "I can go, now that I'm awake. I'll just--" He began to swiftly pull the covers away, standing before the woman. "Thank you. For the night. It was... nice."

There are far too many layers for Noah. Above the actual sensitive human within him, he is covered in anger, depression, self-loathing, and secrets. Not a lot of people know Noah’s true backstory. Hell, people hardly even know he was adopted. That’s with a good reason though. He learned the hard way that one cannot just trust everyone. His own mother had abandoned him, so from them on, it’s been tricky to say who deserves his loyalty. Even his own brothers have trouble relating to Noah. Despite his very, very, very, tough exterior, Noah is a lover. He loves the idea of love (even though he doesn’t show it) and when he is in a relationship, he is committed. Whether you are a friend or lover, do not push him too hard. Noah does not like being pushed.

"Is there any reason why you're still up running around this place and not just relaxing on the couch with me? You know there's something wrong when I'm the one sitting down."

Perhaps the easiest way to piss of Noah MacKenzie was to interrupt or disturb his day, one way or another. Whether someone passed him a flier or bumped his shoulder roughly, it would ruin his entire day. That was just the man he was-- so easily ticked off and frustrated. Coming across Noah was something similar to meeting a cat, honestly, one just did not know what they get! Those closest to him knew best though, they knew when to hide or when to jump in and calm him down. Maybe that's why, after his car accident, he didn't mind running back to his work office rather than going with the tow truck driver to grab that estimate from the mechanic. At least at work, people would sympathize. They would feel for him; let him know that what happened was intolerable.
The scene of the accident itself wasn't pretty. After disappearing, in a good mood, for a lunch break, Noah figured he'd visit a brunch room upstate with his mother. And there were no complaints at the restuarant either! Noah and his mother were both content with the food being served. They didn't mind the traffic it took to get there and back, nor did they fuss or argue (not that that was their usual conversation, but anyway). To be frank, he was having a relatively good afternoon. Until that dismissive black Town car came into his lane on his way back to the office. So distructive and interruptive, it took every bit of Noah to not jump out of his Lexus and pound on the other car's hood.
After arriving a few minutes late from his break, he shared this awful story with his co-workers. Just as he suspected, they shook their heads and winced at the situation. Some explained what they would have done differently, some even offered to give Noah the name of their trust mechanic. His own car was expected to be towed off to the nearest Lexus dealership (so it was taken care of) but he thanked them all generously for having the empathy to let him rant. His bosses were unstandable, and even offered him an early release along with a business car to take him to the dealership on the company's budget. It was a nice gesture, notable and respectable for sure.
Noah, despite being in the midst of intrigued co-workers, had his eyes set on his assistant. She was off at the end of his side of the building, respectfully working and typing away at her desk. After the dust settled, and it was time to get back to work, Noah walked toward his office, but approached Lara first. Setting down a rather full styrofoam box on her desk, he smiled contently. "I bought you lunch. I need you to stay at your desk for lunch... Did I miss any calls?" It wasn't the best way to greet his assistant, the one he'd had a rather awkward exchange with just a week ago, but an exchange he made nonetheless.

"We, the jury, find the defendant.. Not guilty."
Victory. The word had, not just a taste of its own, but a feeling. It was more than just a win, it was a way of life. A life Noah could get used to nonetheless. And every time Noah MacKenzie proved a client of his innocent under oath, it was the best win he could ever have. There was, of course, something more satisfying about winning Anna's case. She had a story, and it didn't just involve the drugs she had been caught with. At least that's what Noah believed- that's what she allowed Noah to believe. After the innocent girl was escorted from the table and to the back (to be released indefinitely), the Asian man buttoned his suit back up and proceeded to the release section of the court, to wait for the last walk with his client.
