Nora stood outside the front door for almost two full minutes. She'd dropped Nina off with Seth a little while ago. Nina had practically skipped inside after reminding Nora, very matter-of-factly, that Seth made better grilled cheese than she did. Now she was here, staring at a door. It wasn't that she didn't know how to ask someone on a date. It was that she couldn't remember the last time she'd wanted to. For years, every decision had belonged to someone else. Every outing had been monitored, questioned, approved, or turned into an argument. Somewhere along the way she'd stopped wondering what she wanted because wanting things had become exhausting. Now she wanted something. She opened the door and stepped inside, finding him in the living room. "...Hi." The word came out far too formal for someone she'd shared a roof with for months. "I was wondering..." She hesitated. "Would you..." She sighed. "I had this planned...I wanted to ask if you'd go on a date with me." She looked up quickly before she could lose her nerve. "I know we've had dinners together and movie nights and..." She smiled to herself. "Whatever it is we do where we accidentally end up spending every evening together. But we've never actually gone on a date." She gave him a small smile. "I thought..." She looked back at him. "Maybe we could."
Nora had already been there a couple of days but the kitchen still felt wrong. She moved around the space awkwardly, looking for the ingredients and tools she needed. Cooking made sense. It asked for nothing she couldn’t give. No explanations, no careful phrasing. It was easier than trying to put gratitude into words. Easier than thinking too hard about what it meant to be told she could stay. The garlic went into the pan first, then the onion. The smell was familiar, making the kitchen feel more comfortable, a little less temporary. Then she heard a sound. Nina had already gone to bed, refusing to eat anything besides dino nuggets. The front door opened. A total ordinary sound. Her body reacted like it wasn’t. Her breath vanished, caught in her chest, the knife she'd been using, slipping from her hand as her muscles pulled taught. She jerked her hand the wrong way as she heard the footsteps getting closer. "Shit." The thin, bright line of red spread across her palm. She stared at it, uncomprehending, while her pulse hammered too loudly in her ears. She grabbed a towel, pressing it into her hand as her brain screamed at her to move. To run. Then she saw Colm. “I’m okay,” she called out, too quickly, voice tight around the edges. “I’m okay, I just....” As the panic loosened its grip on her, she was almost dizzy. Embarrassment coursed through her now that she realized how ridiculous she'd been. “I was making dinner,” she added, gesturing vaguely toward the stove. “Just… as a thank you. I didn’t know when you’d be back.”
female, she/her. Hey, is that Reese Witherspoon? No, that is just Nora Marlowe around Cypress Cove. I heard they are 45 years old, and their birthday is November 18, 1980. They rest their head on the Isle but they can mainly be found trying to rebuild her life. Some say they are gentle, devoted, and resilient but can also be anxious, self-sacrificing, and guarded. If they had a theme song, it would be The Story by Brandi Carlile. I hear they are a newcomer, either way Cypress Cove is home and welcomes you!
Nora Marlowe grew up in Redhaven, Georgia, where she built the kind of steady, predictable life she thought she was supposed to want. During spring break in 2003, she took a weekend trip to Cypress Cove with friends and ended up at The Black Harbor Pub, where she met Fionn and Colm O’Reilly. What was meant to be one easy, impulsive weekend turned into something she never expected when she went home with Fionn and then discovered she was pregnant later that spring.
Nora chose to raise Seth in Redhaven and never told Fionn about the pregnancy. For the first few years of Seth’s life, it was just the two of them. When Seth was still young, Nora met Rex Volkov. He was attentive, confident, and seemed like someone who could give both her and Seth stability. They married not long after. Over time, though, Rex slowly isolated her from friends and family, encouraging her to stay home and depend entirely on him. Nora became a full-time homemaker, believing she was doing what was best for her family.
Eleven years ago, their daughter Nina was born. After Nina’s birth, Rex began treating Seth differently. Nora was told Seth was jealous of the baby and struggling to adjust. When Seth eventually ran away and found Fionn, Nora believed what Rex told her and agreed to an arrangement where Seth would live in Cypress Cove and visit Redhaven on weekends and holidays. What she didn’t know was that Rex had been hurting him.
Over the years, Rex’s behavior toward Nora became increasingly controlling and eventually violent. He convinced her the abuse was her fault and threatened both Seth and Nina if she told anyone. She lived that way for years, trying to keep peace and protect her children the only way she thought she could. Recently, Colm, returned from Ireland. The two had stayed loosely in touch over the years and began speaking more often.
When Rex discovered their messages after Nora accidentally left her phone at home one day, he confronted her and gave her the worst beating he ever had. This time, Nora left. She took Nina and drove straight to Colm’s house in Cypress Cove. What she didn’t know was that Seth had been on his way to see her that same day. After she left, Rex’s anger turned toward him instead. Colm contacted Fionn, and together they made sure Rex wouldn’t get another chance to hurt anyone again.
Now Nora is staying in Cypress Cove with Colm while Seth recovers from his injuries. She’s trying to rebuild a life she hasn’t had control over in years, while working through the guilt of not realizing what Seth had been facing as a teenager and learning how to believe she and her children are finally safe
