One Way Pendulum (1965)
The world is figuratively one’s oyster, and “the world may undoubtedly be an oyster, though to whom it would belong, to whom it would be answerable in that capacity, is a great deal less certain. It’s something that will have to remain a matter for conjecture until science comes up with a definitive answer.” —N.F. Simpson, If So, Then Yes (and illustrated by yours truly)
"His dialogue runs as smoothly as a conference between cliché experts even when his people are considering a scheme for supplying eagles with parachutes and spectacles." - The Listener, 28 July 1960
N.F. Simpson's absurdist gem 'A Resounding Tinkle' had its theatre premiere at the Royal Court on 1 December 1957 and its first broadcast adaptation appeared on the Third Programme on 20 July 1960. Deryck Guyler and Alison Leggatt starred. Frederick Laws, quoted above, also said: "The play was very amusing but I also found it alarming and difficult to understand." Simpson - pictured, in 1963 - lived until 2011 and his final play, 'If So, Then Yes', had its premiere in London in 2010.
Finally found the film adaptation of "One Way Pendulum", the play that our theatre group is working on this year. Only a few months to go! If you live in Prague, check it out. We're called the Drama Queens.
This is the film version of the play we are rehearsing and adapting at the moment. N.F. Simpson's One Way Pendulum is a classic absurdist comedy that some say inspired Monty Python.
I'm helping edit some of the script right now, for a Czech audience. What hard work! Hopefully we will pull it off. I would really love to get my hands on a copy of the DVD, seems to be hard to come by...
