Rolls-Royce power! In 1978, when Boeing launched the 757 with orders from Eastern and British Airways, the engine was the Rolls-Royce RB211-535C, the first time RR had provided the launch engine on a Boeing jet. The -535C was based on the RB211 that had a proven track record on the L-1011 Tristar and 747. But a year later Pratt & Whitney came out with the PW2000 series that was 8% more efficient on the 757 and selected by Delta Airlines for their 757 order. Boeing leaned hard on RR for improvements to the -535C engine- using technology that would later end up in the Trent series of engines, RR came out with the -535E4 variant of the RB211 and while it didn’t match the PW2000’s efficiency, it was the first engine to use wide chord fan blades and was superbly reliable. It featured also a full length cowl compared to the -535C’s short cowl and exposed hot section. When American ordered the 757 in 1988, they selected the new -535E4 engine, making it the first time since the Tristar that Rolls Royce cracked the US market. In fact, American rather interestingly selected the -535E4 engine *before* it had formally ordered the 757! This engine now powers the majority of 757s built. I believe it’s a -535E4 that set the world record for time on wing, something over 40,000 hours.
