From several years ago, one of Skywest’s Bombardier CRJ200s, N902EV, makes a sunset final approach into DFW. I had posted previously how the CRJ series of regional jets relied on earlier engineering work by Canadair (before they were bought by Bombardier) on a stretched business jet derivative of the Challenger CL-600 called the Challenger E, sometimes referred to as the CL-610E. The Challenger E was planned as a competitor to the Gulfstream series but was canceled in 1981 and the work rolled into further improvements to the Challenger jet. Back then, CL-600 was a marketing designation for the Challenger but it was also its certification designation (CL-600-1A11). To confuse things further, the next version of the Challenger was the CL-601, but its certification designation was CL-600-2A12. When the Canadair Regional Jet was formally launched in 1989, it was certificated as a variant of the CL-600 Challenger so the CRJ100/200s have the certification designation CL-600-2B19, the CRJ700/701/702 are the CL-600-2C10, the CRJ705 is the CL-600-2D15 and the CRJ900 is the CL-600-2D24. So why does the CRJ705 have a different certification designation? Because it’s not a CRJ700, it’s a CRJ900 with a different cabin configuration to comply with scope clauses. Similar scenario, scope compliance, led to the CRJ550, a CRJ700 with fewer seats, and the CRJ440, a CRJ200 with fewer seats. CRJ100, CRJ200, CRJ700 and so on are marketing designations. Want to confuse things further? All of the CRJ series of aircraft had a different designation when it comes to type ratings- for that, CL-65 is used. Got that all straight? There’s a quiz tomorrow, LOL. #Avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #KDFW #DFW #airport #igTexas #planespotting #airlines #Bombardier #CRJ200 #N902EV #Skywest #American #AmericanEagle #DFWavgeek #instagramaviation #splendid_transport #instaaviation #aviationlovers #aviationphotography #flight #AvgeekSchoolofKnowledge #AvGeeksAero #AvGeekNation (at DFW Airport) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2rYOh8Bbjj/?igshid=107bs5feoh0te
