Saying Goodbye
“Your kindness, your compassion, your love...These are your gifts to me, and our gifts to them, forming a bond which transcends time and space.”
I like to think that since we didn’t get a hug in the Crystarium (they’re both trying to keep it together in front of everyone), when they went to Nabaath Areng to privately pay respects to Minfilia’s memory one last time, that’s when they have their parent-child farewell embrace.
FFXIV Shadowbringers - The Art of Reflection - Histories Forsaken
" Death to my friends. "
"Ul’dah is our home”
Minfilia’s words, from the moment in 2.x when Alphinaud proposed the Scions move to Mor Dhona, and she resisted, having lived in Thanalan since she was a child, fleeing Ala Mhigo and Garlean spies alongside her father. Since the fateful parade that saw her adopted by a woman involved in the plot that cost Warburton his life--and earned her an older brother, too, even if at first Thancred was still too callow a youth to realize how important that girl was and how he had to do better showing it.
I don’t know why it took me this long and a second playthrough to make the connections, but if Amh Araeng is the Norvrandt equivalent of Thanalan, and Nabaath Areng, it’s shining capital, was the equal of Ul’dah...
Minfilia stopped the Flood at the representation of her adopted home. The symbolic equivalent of the place where she met Thancred was where she said her last goodbye to him, and later to the WoL. Thancred gained a sister in that desert city...and years later, she left him with her last child in the parallel of the same place.
It’s late and I dunno where I’m going with this, but I feel like there’s something to the fact that out of all the places to stop the Flood from fully consuming Norvrandt, Minfilia ended up in the place that felt the most like home.
