Vladimir Nabokov to his New Yorker editor
This poem is written from the perspective of an unreliable narrator, inspired by Lolita. It is not meant to defend these ideas
" In thought and in truth , beauty lies within those little hearts , those soft little hands and slender legs , little skirts around their tiny waists , they wave around in joy at me
The world full of terror , claims their innocence far too early , to remain children is their wish and mine too for in children is purity that demands workship .
I'll save them from the world by holding them tight , hands around their chest and waist , I sit them upright on my lap and thigh , I'll kiss then more than their mothers do goodnight .
All I want and need is their love for me , a love so sweet like candy drops or sugary treats , I'll buy them lots of toys and games and keep them children all the way and hope they never get taken away ..
If my love is pure and simple in form and thought ,why is that by society's law I'm to wrought in thought, to cleanse myself of such unholy thoughts , in the name of god.
I cannot repent for my mind is lost on that little girl selling matches on the street , tell is it so wrong to take part in joy when a little girl's born , to wish her well and win her heart ? "
Tfw I just found out the title of the song I wrote is nearly identical to a line from Lolita 💀

the moral sense in mortals is the duty we have to pay on mortal sense of beauty
