“ are you alright over there, admiral? ”

He smiles sadly as he feels her fingers wrap around his own. Her skin feels soft where it touches his, nearly as smooth as the velvety petals she had folded into his palm. He had certainly lived to see her glory, he thought. She was a born leader, he had known that since the day he had met her, yet it still filled him with a quiet sense of awe to watch the almost effortless way she commanded both a room of politicians and a fleet of rebel ships. Admiral seemed to suit her, far better than Queen or Senator ever did. Watching her thrive in her element was a privilege.
But his own glory– that had already come and gone. His glory had been the years he had spent on the front lines of the clone wars. Not the fighting itself– that part he had hated, even more so now that he knew all the blood he had shed was in vain. It was the feeling of having Anakin by his side that he missed, of being The Team. Kenobi and Skywalker: The Great Negotiator and The Hero Without Fear. He had felt so invincible then, so self-assured. So convinced that whatever may come to pass, he would always have Anakin with him. It had been willfully naive, and shamefully unjedi-like, and yet had allowed himself to believe it, and to blind himself to Anakin’s steady decline as the war had progressed. No, his glory did not lie ahead; it was well behind him.
“I’m afraid I’ve already lived past that.”

A reassuring smile curls the corners of his lips, small but genuine. He lets the comment hang between them for a moment before reaching out, resting a hand just by her elbow.
❛ I can’t promise Anakin will be particularly careful, but I can promise to watch out for him, ❜ he always did. The touch is only fleeting before he withdraws his hand, glancing up the corridor to see people already making their way towards the hanger. He would have to go shortly for the final briefing.
❛ We will be back before you even notice we’re gone. ❜

“I’m petrified of being alone. It’s pathetic, I know.”

“Forgive me, Senator, I didn’t mean to lie to you.” Hands raised in surrender Bodhi stepped closer, fully aware of the fact she was expecting someone else. For months now he’d been in the personal escort of the Supreme Chancellor and had learned enough to lie his way into her apartment, but now face to face with the small senator Bodhi felt a spike of fear. “Please, before you call security I’m begging you, you have to hear me out. And...and then you can do whatever you want.”
Bodhi was too scared to have a thought in his mind of hurting the senator, and he didn’t doubt that she was armed. “I couldn’t state why I was here officially...doing so would have been suicide. I didn’t know where else to turn, please.”
The rambling was unbecoming, but as anxiety took hold in his voice and his hands slowly lowered he looked more and more like a desperate man. “Please...”
