"NIGHT WITCHES" ― The 588th Night Bomber Regiment -- unaffectionately known by the Germans as Night Witches (Nachtexen) -- was a group of female aviators in the Soviet Air Forces during WWII which was led by Irina Sebrova [Anna Próchniak] and Yevdokia Bershanskaya [Keira Knightley]. A small regiment -- at it’s largest it had about 80 women -- it began attacks against the Nazis in 1942 and continued until the end of the war. Flying practically obsolete, bi-planes intended for flight training and crop dusting, the women could only carry 6 bombs at a time and nothing else -- not even parachutes. This required multiple missions at night. Despite their outdated planes, the women made great use of their maneuverability and Nazi fighter planes found it difficult to shoot them down. An attack technique of the night bombers was to idle the engine near the target and glide to the bomb release point, with only wind noise to reveal their location. German soldiers likened the sound to broomsticks which earned the women their nicknames. Through harassment missions as well as precision bombing missions, the women terrorized the Nazis and helped achieve the Allied victory. Based on the true story of the 588th Night Bomber Regiment
"[The Night Witches] were loathed. And they were feared. Any German pilot who downed a "witch" was automatically awarded an Iron Cross." [x]
