NACIMIENTOS Traditional Nativity Scenes from Mexico December 8, 2017 – January 7, 2018 SOUTH GALLERY
Nacimientos: Traditional Nativity Scenes from Mexico is a presentation of traditional nacimientos, or nativity scenes, which are constructed all over Mexico during the Christmas season and are powerful examples of the blending of indigenous pre-Columbian and Spanish Colonial beliefs and methods of making. The exhibition features a rich tradition of handmade nacimientos from the Museum’s Permanent Collection and loans from Don and Polly Johnson. The nativity scenes are made using a diverse range of materials and often depict subject matter that is uniquely Mexican, such as the cacti, livestock, market scenes, and other native plants that make up Mexico’s landscape and cultural identity. The exhibition will also provide insight into the traditions and practices that surround the celebration of Christmas in Mexico. Visitors will learn about various significant days including Día de la Candelaria, and Día de los Reyes, the food and drinks associated with the Christmas season, and the unique cultural practices like the posada processions that are traditional to Christmas in Mexico.
