I think that another reason people believe that we live in a post-racial society is that there are no signs saying 'colored-entrance,' 'whites only,' things like that; it’s not written down for us anymore. It’s drilled into us. From the images we see, from the stories that we’re told, from the way our history has been written by the victors... it leaves a majority of America looking and feeling inadequate; dehumanized at times, and out of place a lot of times. Racism’s biggest effect in the 21st century is in the mind of those being affected by racism. It is not in the mouths and the words of people who still think calling me a nigger is going to make me cry. It is in the way that I view myself, and the standards I held myself to in adolescence.
