Overheard on a White “progressive” talkshow:

"OMG Daniele Watts, the actress from Django Unchained was arrested for suspicion of prostitution! She’s Black and her boyfriend is White, but only she was arrested! That was probably racism. Maybe. Oh no, wait…heh, turns out *she* was actually having sex with him. Well *that* changes everything, now doesn’t it? Totally not racism. See guys, this is why we can’t be so quick to just label everything racism right off the bat”

Me: hole up…wait a minute…like WTF does that ***derailing*** tidbit even change? How does “sex” somehow magically negate the fact that the White boyfriend was NOT arrested, but the Black woman was, when they were BOTH there??? Why did HE get a pass but SHE got arrested if they were BOTH allegedly engaged in an illegal act?

This is a good example of precisely why I have a BIG problem with a lot of White liberal “allies” who constantly believe that their whiteness alone gives them the all the expertise they’ll ever need to white-splain racism and definitively declare what is, and what is not racism from--of all places--the LAPD. All of this absolute "certainty" about racism from White people who have never, and will never experience racism themselves

Too many White people (and yes, too many White progerssive “allies”) are wearing White privilege racial blinders and are DESPERATE to use any opportunity to perpetuate » post racial feel good tropes and seek out almost any tiny minutia to excuse, minimize, deny or otherwise needlessly equivocate to exonerate obvious racism

He really helped design some AllLivesMatter 1's. I'm so tired of Pharrell and his post-racial bullshit. We get it, you think you're exempt from experiences of race because you're wealthy and accomplished. I've given up on Pharrell, but he's going to have an impact on Black and Brown children (like he did on me), which I am concerned about. Society is not post racial. The human race is an irrelevant concept of homogeneity while social hierarchies and constructs are in place to intentionally divide it. I never thought I would be so disappointed in one of my childhood heroes. If I see a young kid wearing these, best believe they are getting a lecture. Though, we all know these will probably be instacopped by all the socially ignorant hypebeasts out there. Ohh well.

I recently heard a white person say, “I think the number of white allies to anti-racist movements like #BLM has increased with today’s generation” and while that may be a true statement, it worried me a little.

Black people cannot end racism on our own, so yes, it’s a good thing that there are a lot of visible white allies. And hopefully they’re being as vocal when they witness racism from friends and family as they are on social media. But let’s remember: the number of c/overt racists isn’t somehow decreasing just because we may be seeing more white allies. Anti-Black racists aren’t going away or even dwindling in numbers.

All of the aging racists are replenishing their ranks and quite literally training their replacements every single day. Look closely at a lot of the profiles of racists on Twitter, Tumblr and Facebook, for example. They aren’t old white people who are all in their 50s or older. Most of these casual racists are teens and people in their 20s, 30s and 40s.

So while I personally appreciate white allies, especially the ones who actually show up at protests, now probably isn’t the time paint overly rosy pictures & act like we’re halfway there. We. Are. Not. We are still a very long way from a “post-racial” society where black people and other persons of color enjoy the same basic privileges as our white counterparts.

Abigail Fisher and Affirmative action

This is not a post racial society. There is active discrimination against minorities. We are denied jobs, homes, and education for the fact that we are of color or of lower class etc. Affirmative action only begins to repair some of the injustices that have occurred in this country, and we are not able to advance minorities or repair this damage or expel these prejudices if we pretend being a minority does not influence harm against your advancement. Colleges and universities consider two categories of criteria when weighing an application. The first is based in academics, which is your grade point average, SAT and possibly ACT scores. For that Abigail you did not measure up. You were not accepted instantaneously because you were not in the top 10% of your class to get into the University of Texas. Your SAT scores were below their average, and your GPA of a 3.59 was not impressive enough to earn you a spot at the very competitive university. I could not personally read your essays or see your club and/or community service activities, however they were undoubtedly short of the universities appeal for their second category of criteria. For you to say your privilege of fellowship, which is there due to classism and racism in a country where minorities were kept from institutions of learning and physically attacked upon entering these established societies, is a stance of ignorance, entitlement, and quit frankly is worthy of disgust. For you to then blame minorities for your lack of acceptance is enraging, pitiful, irresponsible, and abolishes that racial/economic influence that would give you any upper hand in the first place. You are displaying white privilege and white supremacy in one of the slimiest of ways; you demand entrance due to your history of racialized "greatness", for which I am to inform you you did not qualify as great but rather mediocre. You shift responsibility for your academic and social requirements unto classes of people who for centuries were banned from these institutions and whose children undoubtedly worked harder and smarter than their privileged counterparts to be given the same opportunity in the first place. You do not get to tell people of oppressive backgrounds their plights are ignorable while using the silver spoon you were born with to overcome any obstacle. You are not special, and that is not our fault.
