I have not bitten my nails or made my fingers bleed in 7 weeks. I’ve struggled with obsessively biting, picking and even tweezing my nails & cuticles since I was a toddler. I’ve had infection after infection in multiple fingers because of this habit, which has prevented me from journaling, driving, and participating in my own band without awful pain from my swollen, bleeding hands.
I used Mavala Stop nail polish for a couple of weeks to bring my attention to the fact that I was biting. it’s truly horrible tasting and impossible to ignore, which allowed me to address the reasons why so might be anxious, stressed, or bored, rather than continue to bite unconsciously.
when I was waiting for the polish to arrive, I always made sure that I had some sort of oil or salve any time we were about to watch a movie or do something that I would normally find myself chewing throughout. this sort of doubled as a fidget mechanism — I would (and still do) massage the oil into my cuticles throughout the film. it sort of created a new habit, which was restoring my fingers back to health. once you start seeing progress there, it does give you pause when you feel like you should bite.
I stopped wearing the polish a couple weeks in because, honestly, I wanted to eat a dang potato chip without wanting to claw my own tongue off (if you touch your nail to your lip, that taste will find the back of your mouth somehow. witchcraft), but also because I found I really didn’t need it all that much anymore. after 7 weeks, I’m still going.
it’s hard and requires a lot of discipline but I think I’m gonna win. is anyone else doing this? has anyone else failed at this? what did and didn’t work for you?
