Battier to Become Spokesman for Naismith Awards

Former Duke standout Shane Battier, the only male basketball player to win a Naismith Trophy in both high school and college, has agreed to become the program spokesperson for the Naismith Awards, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced today. Battier will help promote brand-building initiatives for the Naismith Trophies, the most coveted award in college and high school basketball. As a senior at Detroit Country Day School in Beverly Hills, Mich., Battier won the 1997 Naismith Trophy, presented annually to the top high school basketball player in the nation.  He went on to play four years at Duke, where he led the Blue Devils to the 2001 National Championship and won the Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T that same year. Battier is the most recent of six players who won the Naismith Trophy and a national championship in the same season.  The others include Christian Laettner (Duke, 1992), Danny Manning (Kansas, 1988), Scott May (Indiana, 1976), Bill Walton (UCLA, 1972, 1973) and Lew Alcindor (UCLA, 1969). Duke has won more men's Naismith Trophies (7) than any other school. "Shane is a tremendous person to be the face of our organization, not only because he is a two-time Naismith winner, but because he is so highly respected for what he does both on and off the basketball court," said Eric Oberman, executive director of the Atlanta Tipoff Club. "I am honored to serve as the spokesperson for the Naismith Awards," said Battier. "It was beyond my wildest dreams to have won the Naismith Award as a high school senior, and then again my senior year of college.  I am proud of this accomplishment and proud to be aligned with an award that, through its rich history, is truly part of the fabric of high school and college basketball." Battier was selected by the Vancouver Grizzlies with the sixth pick of the first round of the 2001 NBA Draft.  He currently plays with the Miami Heat. Battier and his wife Heidi established The Battier Take Charge Foundation in January 2010 to encourage and inspire leadership qualities in young people. The Battier's believe that furthering education for at-risk students is crucial in the attempt to encourage young leaders who may not otherwise have the means to attend college. The Foundation serves to award scholarships to at-risk students who have proven themselves to be deserving young leaders.
