Here it is! This is it! The greatest thing in the universe, real or fictional! It’s Pooka! Everyone stop what you’re doing! Take the day off from work or school or any other obligation! They’ll understand. Because you’re going to learn way more than you ever needed to know about a colorful bunch of bouncing pixels!
Pooka isn’t really an obscure enemy at all. It’s iconic. Basically the face of the Dig Dug franchise! Dare I say even one of the most well-known video game enemies of all time? I do dare. And I still think it deserves even MORE love!
Pookas are the most basic enemy in Dig Dug, and have no method of attack other than direct contact. Of course, as enemies, they exist to be destroyed... and this is where their fame comes in. These adorable creatures exist to be mercilessly pumped full of air until their bodies burst and they die. Wow!
Don’t worry, though. According to the Mappy animated series by the now-defunct ShiftyLook, Pookas are everywhere, with no natural predators. When you play the game, just think of it as population control, to help the species as a whole! Also, if you’re wondering why Dig Dug is shirtless here, it’s because he wanted to show of his toned abs, the result of a juice cleanse he did. He also drinks Crystal Pepsi in this episode. The Namco Arcade Expanded Universe is much more in-depth than you think, you know!
Namco is well aware that Pooka is wonderful and precious. One was an ally in Pac-Man World 1, the species appeared as enemies in Pac-Man World 2, and in Pac-Man World Rally, one is even playable, in this gigantic drill kart!
But what IS a Pooka? You know what time it is! It’s time to delve into the biology of a creature that doesn’t exist! Here we go!
As Pookas move around, the little tail thingy they have goes up and down, and in Dig Dug Arrangement, the first boss, a giant Pooka, allows us to see that in more detail. That’s not just a tail- it’s a wind-up key! Does this mean Pookas are at least somewhat mechanical? Wow! I guess that would explain why they have no natural predators. But who created them? And why? Why are they dangerous? And why do they lurk in underground tunnels? They have no means of digging!
Pooka’s most notable defense mechanism, which it shares with Fygar, is to turn into a ghost. What?! Don’t ask me! I didn’t make this game! I wish I could come up with something so outlandish for a biomechanical balloon to do. In ghost form, Pookas are still vulnerable to Dig Dug’s pump, but can phase through solid matter.
Finally, a few years ago, I went as Dig Dug for Halloween, and made a real Pooka to carry around! It was a balloon with cardboard legs and tail, and a pair of yellow lab goggles with drawn-in eyes. The goggles were for my Pooka costume the previous year! That did not work very well. I am not spherical.
Of course, a balloon wearing goggles is very front-heavy, so it was kind of awkward to hold. But still fun! If you love Pooka too, try making your own!
One of the pics from the Cheer shoot yesterday!!! 💕 The shoot itself was kinda washed out by the rain, so we all hid in Namco arcade and had fun! ❤️ More pics to come! Xxx
We have a bunch of mini-arcade cabinets up for pre-order. Perfect as props for your figures!

Janet and I met up at Waterloo Station and walked to the Thames in search of Europe’s fastest bumper cars! We found them and, despite being not noticeably faster, it is always fun recklessly driving into your girlfriend’s car at top speeds!
