Name discrimination is alive and well in 2021 – and I can’t help but wonder what impact it’s had on my life
In Reluctant Defense of "Raven-Symoné"
Let’s face it, folks. We (meaning Black people) lost Raven-Symoné Christina Pearlman a long time ago. We knew she was gone when she told us last year she was from every “continent in Africa [and every continent in Europe] except for one.” So when her latest gaffe went viral, in which she said she would indeed discriminate against people with names like “Watermelondrea” in hiring practices, who…

Raven Symone: Stop Embarrassing Yourself #video #ravensymone
If I could be granted one wish today, it would be for Raven Symone to STOP EMBARRASSING HERSELF! She has become the center of coonery and buffoonery with comments largely aimed at African American culture. Raven, a beautiful, young woman, but who speaks–it seems–without thinking.
On Friday she told the world that she wouldn’t hire anyone with a ghetto-name and quoted the name Watermelondria.…

Watermelondrea
She said she wouldn’t hire someone named ‘Watermelondrea’.
Twitter goes off because some do not like her period, no matter what she says. This means that they are biased...Remember people becoming angry at her for giving her opinion on changing one of our bills to a woman? She wanted Rosa Parks though the winner was Harriet Tubman, by popular opinion.
Here I am thinking that she suggested someone white which caused all of the FOX News type outrage from black people on Twitter and other go-to popular opinion of the vocal majority. She merely gave her opinion on something that asked for people to give their opinion. Or else there wouldn’t have been a poll to vote on in the first place, which requires a person to give their opinion!
Goodness
That’s how you can tell people that are angered by her are biased and petty and just, letting their emotions getting in the way of judging a person objectively.
Now back to the matter at hand
I only watched a snippet of it that was posted online. I’m not sure how that example of an absurd name was bad. Names matters to people when hiring, I mean it is a reality. I don’t mind Aaliyah, Ashley, Andre, DeShawn, Shaniqua [so common], Jamaria, Tupac [Indian name too], etc. However, something ridiculous such as ‘watermelondrea’?
Is she the only black person that will not care for someone with ridiculous names? No. I used to ask my mom where did these creative, not ridiculous, names come from that always existed in eights [example: Octavius, popular name in my community]. She told me well some young people are going back to their roots [not said in a complementary way]. I had an aunt that sent me an email about a woman named La-a, pronounced La/dash/a [usually pronounce ‘dash’ as ‘day-sh’]. And you know me always playing devil’s advocate, asking her why it is a problem that her mother probably did not know how to spell it correctly. Yes some unique names may be due to not knowing how to spell the name [Airwrecka or Erica]. It happens.
Here is a black man given the same speech to black people, and some comments agreeing:
Ratchet Names Gone Wild!!!!
Ratchet or ghetto names as they call them, or names that are misspelled or names that are not actually African in origin [attempting to be respectful and knowledgeable] just ridiculous is what Raven and other like her including black people [and yes they are still black even though they do not agree with your opinion as a black person, we are not chameleons you racist] are referring to...
Should she not hire someone because of it? It’s her choice to do so or not, but no. Logical it does not make sense, since it does not determine a person’s character or work ethic.
The City of Helsinki is starting a trial of anonymous job applications. The intent of the process is for the employer to focus solely on the skills and experience of job seekers, rather than on gender, age or origin.
