Why must a linux server be rebooted to properly handle a change in resolv.conf?

I know this has to just be a lack of my understanding but here’s the problem.

We recently changed DNS servers from 192.168.1.1 to .2, so I went around to all 8 of my linux servers and changed /etc/resolv.conf to reflect the change. Note that they’re all static, there’s no DHCP involved.

Windows computer Name -> IP resolution on iphone?

We have iphones in our network and they can’t resolve computer names. We want to access internal sites through internal names (http://server), however we can’t.

Is there any solution to this?

I’m running a mixed environment at home and at work. My server machines are Win Vista, and I have a Unibody Macbook Pro running 10.5.7

On my mac, I can ping some home windows by name (If I use the full name such as stallion-main.local), but other machines, I can’t.

There is already by default, and it works (Win 7):

::1 localhost

This also works (testing with ping):

::1 hosta

But when I’m trying to add something non-loopback, it doesn’t resolve:

fe80::215:afff:fec6:ea64 realhost

So that I can do:

C:>ping fe80::215:afff:fec6:ea64 Reply from fe80::215:afff:fec6:ea64: time=2ms
