One year ago today, I went to Cook County Courthouse and legally changed my name and gender marker. It is one of the proudest moments of my whole life. Growing up, I thought being transgender was a dark terrifying secret that I would have to hide for my entire life. I never thought I’d be able to live this life or do any of the things that made me happiest. But when the judge stamped my papers, I finally felt liberated. No longer am I attached to an identity I did not choose. I get to exist in society closer to who I actually am. Of course, state documentation is in no ways the official “validator” of identity. However, for me, this was a meaningful moment in my transition. Today, I celebrate my new and better life as “Ellie Kim” 🏳️🌈🙋🏻♀️
