Name Game

I don't know when I started naming electronics. I just do. So here is the list of what I have named.

-First Cellphone- Darcy (after Fitzwilliam)

-Second Cellphone- Piece of junk (I had it for two months and it broke)

-Third Cellphone- Indestructable (it response to second's phone evilness)

-MP3- Checkers (it is cute and checkered patterned)

- Nook- Eliot (after poet T.S. Eliot, my favorite)

- First Laptop- Dearest (I love my laptop)

- New Laptop- Antigone (yeah, that one just popped into my head when I saw it)

I know that many people think that this is weird. I don't. I view my electronics as my children in a weird way (that I admit is weird). I take care of them, I use them frequently. They are integral to my life. Shouldn't something important have a name?

In a different way, it creates a sense of relationship with these devices. Take the fact that I am still waiting for Antigone to arrive. I am writing this on Dearest. I will shut down Dearest for the final time in a matter of hours. I am not going to throw it away, I believe in cherishing what I own. 

This is odd, I admit the queerness of it. Oh well, c'est moi.

I've been without my computer for a week or so because some of the keys stopped working, and just picked it up tonight. I absolutely love my iPad, don't get me wrong, but there is just a certain security in having an actual computer.

Amidst all of these feelings of excitement on the drive home, I soon began to realize that I never named my laptop - I know! crazy, right? - so, I immediately began brainstorming different possibilities.

The first step was to figure out his personality (yes, the sex of my computer has always been obvious - I have no idea why, it's just one of those things), and I determined he's intelligent, classy, well-dressed (he rocks his turquoise shell case and stickers), but also complex and unstable (evident by his expensive repair - still bitter but it's fine).

The second step was to think of a character in a book or tv show that fits this profile perfectly and feels right when I say it out-loud.

I settled on Gatsby, as in Jay Gatsby (or John Gatz, if you prefer) from The Great Gatsby. It's one of my favorite books and, despite all of the silly bloggers complaining about the trailer, I am very excited for the new movie to come out. 

Anywho, I'm just happy he is all fixed up, named, and finally home.

I just bought my first external hard drive

I was getting it all set up and when I went to name it, all I could think of was "Incarceron" by Catherine Fisher and so I named it that.

I named my computer the TARDIS today.

...obviously I love it that much.

In retrospect I should've gotten the blue one if I KNEW I was going to name it that.

Seriously, what is up with people naming their electronics? Okay how about this: you guys can give me a name, starting with my laptop. It's a white Macbook. so, let me here what you have to say!!

So, according to that post where people put their laptops name down, there are an awful lot of computers named GLaDOS. We should get t-shirts or something.

029: I name my electronics. 

my Flip video camera is named HAL, à la 2001: A Space Odyssey

my iPod is Idris, AKA Sexy

my old laptop is Mr. Poe from A Series of Unfortunate Events

my camera is Cormac McLaggen because it was my second choice

my printer is GOB

...but I need a name for my new MacBook Pro. Ideas?
