Reading One Piece: Chapters 18-19
-We got backstory! Buggy and Shanks were once apprentice pirates on the same crew. In his greed, Buggy tried to steal both a treasure map and a devil fruit for himself. But he accidentally ended up swallowing the fruit, which a) made him lose his incredible swimming ability, so b) now he can’t reach the treasure on the ocean floor the map lead to, and c) now he can’t sell the devil fruit either since he, you know, ate it. So he’s decided that if he can’t get treasure that’s in the sea, he’ll just use his new devil fruit powers to steal and plunder all the treasure on the sea instead.
-It’s pretty telling that Buggy blames Shanks for “stealing” all his treasure away, when anyone with half a brain cell can easily recognize that Buggy brought all his misfortune on himself and Shanks even saved his life after he fell in the water. Buggy’s so myopic he views the whole world as if it revolves around him, and any slight done to him, however accidental is a crime worthy of death.
-Meanwhile, Luffy can take pretty much any punishment to himself without breaking a sweat, but the instant Buggy targets the hat Shanks gave him, he flips his shit. Buggy fights for himself, Luffy fights to do right by the people he cares about.
-I really miss Shanks. I hope we see more of him.
-”Well, maybe I know... then again, maybe I don’t.” “What are you talking about? Are you an idiot?” asldjhaskdljas Luffy I appreciate you
-God, this fight is so creative. All the things you can do with a stretchy body vs all the things you can do with a detachable body.
-”Don’t come apart!” Ah yes, the greatest superpower known to man: the power of No.
