Passing through Thunder Bay we stopped at Prince Arthur's Landing to make a meal and go for a walk around the Spirit Garden. The Gathering Circle structure was created by Brook McIlroy and Ryan Gorrie. The outer wall has ten steel panels designed by local artist Randy Thomas. The Spirit Garden is a place to gather, honouring the indigenous people who have been in the area for thousands of years. From the landing there is a view in the distance of the Sleeping Giant / Nanabijou across Lake Superior. The common version of the Anishnaabe aadizzokaan says the spirit Nanabijou watched over and helped the Ojibwe. When Europeans were coming Nanabijou offered the gift of silver to the Ojibwe in their time of need, but the Europeans must never learn about this gift or else the gift would become a curse and Nanabijou would turn it to stone. Sioux warriors came into the camps but Ojibwe people refused to give up their gift. The Sioux then sent scouts to learn the location of the silver. Once the scouts had the information needed they left stopping at a trading post. With nothing to pay with the scouts gave the Europeans silver. The Europeans gave the Sioux alcohol to tell them where the silver came from. The secrets were revealed and the Europeans began mining the silver. Angered, Nanabijou created a massive storm from Lake Superior. Large waves sunk European boats. Then, Nanabijou laid down keeping the mine under his feet he crossed his arms over his chest and turned to stone. The shape of the peninsula looks like a large man with his arms crossed and this is Nanabijou as he lays to this day, protecting his gift. Large amounts of silver still lay below with remnants of the old mining company but the attempts to reopen the mines have been proven too difficult because of how far the tunnels go beneath the lake and the unpredictable weather of Lake Superior.
