Something something… that egg episode is kinda weird… something something
My interpretation of this episode builds upon my earlier interpretation of Nanami.
This episode has a similar theme of dehumanization as the cowbell of happiness, and is further exploration of Nanamis fears of not being seen as human. While the cowbell of happiness is focused on the relationship between men and women, Nanamis egg seems to be about female sexuality.
Nanamis reaction to laying an egg, is very reminiscent of a reaction a girl might have having her first period. Nanami is 13 years old, a normal age to get your first period, and egg laying is sort of the hen equivalent to a menstrual cycle. She first wants to ask one of her female friends about laying eggs, but she is too scared. What if her eggs are weird, or everyone else already knows that girls lay eggs and will make fun of her for being out of the loop, or maybe girls aren’t supposed to lay eggs at all and everyone is going to be absolutely disgusted with her.
This is also the only episode in which a character mentions homosexuality, in a misunderstanding were Nanami asks if Touga would prefer a boy or girl to be hatched from the egg, he tells her that women should only love men.
