Lux series Villains!
So you want some characters? Jennifer L. Armentrouts got some characters! The Lux series has a whole host of characters and I usually start with the main ones and work my way to the side characters in these character intro’s but today…yeah today I’m going to start with the Villains. You all know my love for villains is deep and complex because you need a good villain to showcase a good hero/heroine. The Lux series has a whole line up of villains and you meet them as you move through the books. Each villain plays a significant role in furthering the character development of Katy Swartz (our main heroine) and each one is complex and unique in how they are crafted.
It’s going to be difficult to give you a villain intro without giving away spoilers but I’m going to try!
The Thompson Triplets: When you meet these three for the first time one thing stands out above the rest…Adam is pure and awesome; his Andrew and his sister Ash are straight up throat punch material. Andrew and Ash are immediately dislikable, and Katy’s friend Stacey often refers to them as the “Bitch Squad”. As villains go, they’re not the evilest, I’d give them a two out of 10 on the evil scale.
Daemon Black: Daemon Black makes this list ONLY because he’s a straight up arsehole in the first two books. Like he says some things and does some things that, yeah, it’s hard to take and it’s necessary for the story but yeah, it’s downright awful. If you met Daemon Black irl during the first two books you’d want to drop kick him into a lake, or off a really tall building. He’s not evil he’s just bitchy so he gets a one out of 10 on the evil scale.
“So the dickhead had a name. Daemon—seemed fitting. And of course his sister would be as attractive as him. Why not? Welcome to West Virginia, the land of lost models.” ― Jennifer L. Armentrout, Obsidian
Department of Defense (D.O.D.): Let’s make a distinction here, the entire government is not painted evil in this series just this ONE branch and what they do throughout the entire series is nightmarish. The D.O.D. is pretty horrible in that they are casually cruel. It’s the “I’m just doing my job” b.s. that led Germany to build concentration camps kind of bad. Not quite Hitler or Goebbles bad but more an accessory to genocide bad. They get a 7 out of 10 on the evil scale.
Arum: The Arum are the natural enemies of the Luxen. Where the Luxen are bright and shiny like stars the Arum are more like black holes. The Arum can’t use the source like the Luxen can unless they “feed” on a Luxen and that’s as horrible as you’re imagining right now. Like any great villain the Arum are more complex than a simple “good” vs “bad” and finding all the shades of gray in this species is worth the trip. I won’t ruin that for you by going into any great details.
Blake: Two words, Damaged Goods. It’s very difficult to say much of anything about Blake without giving away any major spoilers. Blake plays more than one pivotal role in the development of Katy’s story and like the Arum he’s not entirely evil or entirely good, but he is BAD. He makes bad choices, he has creepy, pathological habits that just leave us readers feeling icky. He’s a product of his environment and that environment is toxic! Blake gets an 8 out of 10 on the evil scale but I’ll be honest there’s a particular set of circumstances that as a female I feel bumps him up to an 8. So, he gets an 8 out of 10 on the evil scale for that reason.
Daedalus: This is the big bad mama-jamma. Daedalus is insidious, soulless, evil with a capital E! Daedalus is responsible for all the worst crimes and when you read about them don’t be surprised if you feel like you’ve heard of this before..like historical déjà vu…because this organization has a LOT in common with a very real, very evil organization that came to power in the 1930’s. They get a 10 out of 10 on the evil scale!
Nancy Husher: Phew ok this is the Dolores Umbridge of this world. Sometimes a villain comes into existence and their only reason for being is to be evil. No shades of grey just straight up evil with a soul as black as the pits of hell. That’s Nancy Husher and I for one love to hate her. Sometimes it’s refreshing to have an uncomplicated hateship with an evil character and she’s mine. Nancy gets a 12 out of 10 on the evil scale because she puts Lucifer to shame with her evil.
Sergeant Jason Dasher: Sgt. Dasher works with Nancy Husher he’s the peanut butter to her nasty jelly. Sgt. Dasher isn’t quite as evil as Nancy but he’s pretty close. Dasher keeps the military side of things running along he’s the S.S. Gestapo to Nancy’s evil Goebbels. He doesn’t commit bad acts for the sole purpose of doing so his major character flaw is he hates to lose and he’ll commit acts of unholy horror to win. Sgt. Dasher gets an 11 out of 10 on the evil scale.
Ethan White: Ethan White I can’t tell you too much about him without spoiling major plot points in the series so I’m just going to say that he’s bad news bears and when he goes full psycho it’s EPIC! Ethan gets a 9 out of 10 on the evil scale but ONLY because his origin story is heartbreaking.
Lux is a series so epic it couldn’t contain just one villain so we have nine of them. Each one is important to the movement of the story and each one deserves recognition for the roles they play throughout.
So Let’s hear it for the Villains without whom we’d have no conflict or resolution.
