Met another Cuban legend today in the poetess Nancy Morejón. Her work touches many parts of Afro-Cuban history and seeks to uplift Mujer Negra (Black Women). I’m walking down the street, touching its trees as I go.

The new bark bears your name

As bright as this afternoon I wander through.

I told you in the clouds and the colors streaking through them,”

I read once in a poem

by Paul Éluard. “I love you” was repeated and repeated.

It was a perfect line, agonizing, flawless.

When I finished reading his poem, on a bright afternoon like this one,

I looked back at the phone. I saw a peach

impossible to describe, like your eyes.

I tried in vain to write a love poem to tell you,

just like the insistent Paul Éluard:

I love you, I told you, I love you, I tell you.
