“We need to think outside the box for our working parents”

Over the next few years the government are planning to invest 1 billion into the childcare industry to ensure  mothers and fathers get the employment support they need. In 2017 more than 65% of mothers returned to work after giving birth and this helped to expand the provision of 15-30 hours free childcare to some of the most in need families.  

Now in 2019 the government are looking into the idea of allowing nurseries to open 7 days a week and extending the opening and closing times. The idea of allowing children to potentially be in a nursery for over 10 hours a day has shocked many early years professionals who are questioning the type of parents who would allow a child to for all intensive purposes to be ‘raised at nursery’. However this is not a new phenomenon, the idea of questioning and judging parental choices has something of a permanent focus in today’s society. With many articles focusing on ‘too much too young: is nursery stressing my child out’ and ‘working mothers blamed for childhood obesity’ - where is the respite for our working parents?

When we take into consideration the idea of opening a nursery later or even extending the opening times to 6/7 days a week we need to think about not just the needs of parents but also the needs of staff who will be expected to work these hours and provide the same level of care they currently do. With extended opening times, staff could be expected to work shift patterns and give up there weekends away from their own children to look after other people’s children. Many may say this is something they do already and they would be getting paid so where is the issue? However, as someone who has worked in the childcare sector for a long time and has experienced long days caring for children who are sometimes unwell, struggling being away from loved ones and trying form their own boundaries - this can be very stressful! So, why do we do it? Because we love our job, but this does not mean we want to work more hours and struggle to find our own work/ life balance. Of course, I cannot speak for all early years workers but our voice is still one that should be heard and taken into close consideration.

While naturally my thoughts and opinions on this subject steer towards the staff and their needs during this debate, I still am drawn to the needs of parents. I have witnessed the struggle many parents have for example having two children who they need childcare for - finding out that in some parts of London many nurseries charge £100 per child per day with only a 10% discount for a second child and realising they can save money with a nanny but then having the need and stress of finding a person they open their home to. Or, working shift patterns themselves and having to call in sick to work on a Saturday when they have no childcare on that day. This is something parents are faced with everyday! The needs of their child vs the need to financially survive in this current bleak and uncertain pre Brexit Britain.

In conclusion, the government has things to consider and our working parents need support. We need to think outside of the box and start considering the needs of the families who rely on the childcare sector to education, support and help our children thrive.

I have two children, one has just turned three and the other is 11 months, turning one next month.My eldest went through what my friends and his nursery described as a ‘biting phase’ when he was around 2 years.  In the last 6 months however the biting has started again and unlike last time I cannot believe it is just a phase.

Dear Sue,

Thank you for reaching out.  Biting behaviour can be a challenge as there are so many possible contributing factors and differing advice in the community. Teething can often contribute to biting behaviour however in the majority of situations biting behaviour is present when a child is finding it difficult, or is unable, to voice their feelings.  Start by observing and reflecting on what is happening around the time the behaviour happens and see if you can find a common theme such as a reoccurring, place, resource or person involved in the behaviour.  Understanding the cause is key in ensuring it doesn’t continue. As he has become a relatively new big brother we do need to consider this as a contributing factor.  Having 1:1 time where you share a story, have bath time or do an activity together can positively impact on their feeling of being an individual and providing a safe space where they can open up and share with you.A teething box they are able to access with different tethers’ and resources they can chew along with a book such as ‘Teeth are not for biting’ by Elizabeth Verdick can give them the space to explore the behaviour appropriately  and can open a dialogue around what we use our teeth for.The most important thing is one of the hardest and that is to focus on the positive behaviour around the biting. Even a negative reaction is better than no reaction for a child so by reacting and responding we are giving them the attention that they may have sought.  Focus on caring for the person/child that has been bitten before redirecting into an activity or game, inviting your son to join and then praising his positive engagement.
