AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
nanowrimo is going fine obviously why do you ask
Hey so I know I haven’t really mentioned this much but I’m doing NaNoWriMo again this year and I’m pretty happy with this excerpt, so it would mean a lot to me if you gave it a read!
---
And then there was Mayra. Euthalia had never seen such a furious child before. It wasn't just her anger, and her pain. It was the maturity of someone forced to grow up way too quickly. Euthalia had long studied for the purpose of one day assuming a leadership role, to become ruler of her kingdom. Even though, at her debut, she had felt confident, she knew that sixteen was still such a young age to be taking those responsibilities. Of course, she was seventeen now, but she saw the same concerns reflected on her sister Anfisa's face.
And Mayra had taken all of this upon herself when she wasn't even half that age. Now she was eleven years old, and her stress and frustration was consuming her faster than she was even able to live out her life. Somehow that was even more saddening than her father's illness.
Euthalia had spent a long time in the bath, floating, reflecting, and not really focusing on anything, until the water began to turn cold. She could barely feel it; her skin just wasn't picking up on the temperature variation, but she started to shiver. She sat up, pulled her hair out of the water, and gave it a quick comb through, just to make sure it was clean. And as she reached for the towel on the rack next to the tub, there was a knock on the door.
"Hey..."
It was Mayra's voice.
"Saria... was it? Get out of there. You've been in there forever."
Although her words were harsh, she sounded much less angry than before. Concerned, even. Instead of the loud yelling, she was so faint as to be almost inaudible.
Euthalia carefully lifted herself out of the tub, supporting herself on the towel rack — gently, so as not to yank it off. She wrapped herself in the towel and took a moment to catch her breath and let her head stop spinning. Then she walked over to the door — one foot in front of the other — And opened it.
Mayra wasn't there.
Euthalia looked on both sides of the door. There really wasn't much room for her to have disappeared into. She shook her head and went back to Nora's room.
As she got dressed, she looked again at the items and pictures in the room. Now knowing what had happened, it was clear that Nora had been keeping her husband's possessions in good shape. The absense she felt earlier was palpable, but it wasn't for lack of love.
Euthalia turned back towards the door, only to be startled by Mayra's presence.
"I'm sorry, I didn't notice you there—" Euthalia started, but Mayra raised a hand and glared. Euthalia sat back down on the bed.
"Sorry," she said. She didn't look very sorry. And she was still glaring pretty intensely. But her eyes darted to the sides and to the floor, and she grimaced, and she clenched her fists. She closed her eyes and exhaled. "Sorry for yelling at you earlier."
"It's... it's okay."
"No, it's not." Mayra came into the room and closed the door. She sat on the bed, but far enough away from Euthalia to not appear very chummy. "I yelled because I was angry. And I was angry because the bridge was out. I shouldn't have taken it out on you."
"Uh... Really, it's fine, I didn't—"
"And I bet my mom has already told you everything about dad," she said, looking as though it were getting increasingly difficult not to clench her teeth while talking. She exhaled again. "Since he died it's my job to provide for the family. And it was my job to fix the bridge. And I didn't do it, so it broke. So it's my fault. So I was mad at myself."
"Mayra..."
Her head snapped in her direction. Her eyes were still intense, and her face was deadly serious. "So I took it out on you. Because of my stupid mistake. So I'm sorry." She looked away again. "Are you happy now?"
"Mayra, you really don't need to..."
"Isn't it unfair?" Mayra's glare could have bored a hole into the opposite wall. "You're just travelling along, and you stop for a rest, and you get some brat yelling at you. Doesn't it suck?"
Euthalia paused. Clearly, whatever problem Mayra had was far greater than whatever words she could try to solve it with.
"I accept."
Mayra looked over her shoulder back at Euthalia. She was still frowning, but in a slightly confused way.
"I accept your apology. Does that make you happy?" Euthalia gave her what she hoped would be an encouraging smile.
"No."
"That's okay too."
"Why are you being so nice to me?"
"Mayra... You and I both know what happened here was unfair. But that doesn't mean I have to be mean to you."
"Whatever."
"No, Mayra, I'm serious. What happened to your father, what happened to you, you didn't deserve it. And it's okay to feel angry about it."
Mayra jumped off the bed and huffed in frustration.
"Don't talk to me like you know what's going on. What about you? Aren't you angry? Since the blessing left you too? Aren't you mad that you were abandoned?" she rambled as she paced around the room.
Euthalia averted her gaze.
"You're pretty sharp."
"I have to be."
A moment passed, carrying the weight of two entire conversations within it.
"So?"
"Hm?"
"Aren't you gonna answer me?"
"I am."
"You're angry?"
"I am."
"Then why won't you show it!?" Mayra exclaimed, throwing her hands outwards.
"You're displaying enough anger for the both of us already." Euthalia sighed and lay down. "And I think I would rather sleep than yell."
"Fine. Have it your way." Mayra stormed out of the room.
Euthalia stared at the wall.
"I really am angry," she muttered to herself.
DUUO
This is... the second-ish-chapter in my NaNoWriMo thing... I’m being a rebel this year so it’s not really a novel so much a loose collection of miscellaneous writings but I hope you enjoy anyway
No editing went into this aside from some basic spellcheck so please forgive the wonky pacing and occasional bad phrasing (it is nanowrimo after all).
(Also I know the setting isn’t very clear from this chapter but most of it is set on a space station orbiting around an alien planet)
CONTENT WARNINGS -Eye trauma (past, non graphic) -Death -Tragic Lesbians -Military stuff -QU writing about Military stuff despite having no knowledge about it so it's probably horribly innacurate -Medical... stuff...? (not very much but i did trigger myself while writing it lol) -I am so sorry about the Tragic Lesbians but this story was going to be tragic anyway no matter what
