Yesterday, February 22, I went to Kayabuki-no-Sato in Miyama-cho, Nantan, Kyoto Prefecture. It was snowing and cold, and it may have been one of the last days that snow had appeared on the thatched roofs of these traditional farmhouses.

Gifu’s Shirakawa-go and Gokayama and Fukushima’s Ouchijuku aren’t the only place with a thatched-roof village surrounded by mountains and rivers! There are also shrines surrounding the village where there is a folktale about a monstrous deer with eight heads. What’s a village without a little mystery eh?
