Single Premiere | Naoise Roo - For You
The Last Mixed Tape is proud to premiere ‘For You’, the latest single from alternative-rock artist Naoise Roo.
Taken from her forthcoming album Lilith (due for release on April 27th via Little L Records) ‘For You’ is a darkly rhythmical, texturally dense slow-burner from the songwriter.
Channeling an ominous, dominant vocal Roo’s voice imposes itself upon the harmonically howling bang and…

More Music!
Sleep is a rose, as the Persians say.
I've slept about 20 hours this weekend. I am pretty knackered. At the moment, I've been asked to do recordings for four different groups. All during this month.
GAH.
Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled. These are musicians who I esteem highly and generally admire (some from a distance prior to now) and as for the ones who are friends of mine, I'm proud as hell that they're actually putting out an EP. It's a huge achievement. Makes me want to do my own (but let's face it, I don't think ANYBODY would want to hear that).
So the groups are Naoise Roo, Emma O'Reilly, Stu Daly, and Diablo DC. Diablo DC is to be confirmed but hell, being asked is awesome. Quite different musical styles, so I'm really happy about it.
Rehearsal time and organising it is tough, though. Working full-time, game company commitments, having a rather recalcitrant puppy at home, all of these add up. Plus, I need to get sleep. With all of this stuff, I gave up on learning game theory. Sad, and generally disappointed in myself, but necessary. I'll just have to learn more later.
At the moment the most intense rehearsals are for Naoise Roo. She has the biggest setup and she needs all of us in there. We're out in Muzzle at the moment. Good studios, better than the Button Factory.
She's got Elder Roche as a producer - the guy has talent, but has a problem with expressing what he wants. Normally I have no problem understanding what somebody is asking for - hell, I was doing a course in Milan where one of my tutors had pretty much no English and I understood what he wanted. So combine that with the fact that this is happening in front of the rest of your band and their attention is laser focused on your problem, frustration and panic combined. It's not good. I got some flashbacks to when I was touring with the Wishing Well in the first days, when I just was a problem. I was a problem towards the end but I was trying to be at that point, so it was a different story.
This Wednesday I'll be recording as part of a quartet with Emma O'Reilly's work - it was through her that Stu got in touch, which is pretty sweet. I took the day off work to do it, so it'll be good. I have been too exhausted to record any of this for the last while. It's been pretty bad. I generally was coming home, sitting down, not getting up.
Was rehearsing yesterday with Stu Daly - I really like his music. It's spacious but not simple and uniquely Dub. I can't wait until Wednesday - a day where I don't have to sit at a screen for 7 hours? I just have to record with a string quartet and get paid for it too? Playing music I like? Daaaaang.
(A note on being paid. I am very glad to be paid and I do love the fact that it is a token of recognition in some respects. I like the fact that the musicians I work with are very ethical and open individuals, and they're upfront about what they can and can't do. However, I really do play and record for the joy of it. I don't mind not being paid. I mind being taken for granted, or feeling like I'm somehow at a disadvantage. This month is going to be tough as hell but it'll be worth it.)
In the meantime, also still taking lots of photos, so watch this space! And my other page, for your random awww.
Actual News! Album recording!
I really should write things as they happen, so here goes.
My very talented friend Naoise Roo called today with the news that recording an album is finally happening, after months of performances and hoping and sorting it out. Investors invested and that's fucking groovy.
Only thing is they want the old guitarist, Karl, on board, who had to leave because of time constraints (Architecture is a harsh, demanding mistress). Think he can do it.
I'm playing backing violin on this, and finger-snaps, if shit gets crazy. I'm really happy that I'll be on an album that I actually give a monkey's about, or at all. It'd be nice to do vocals but some of her friends do a WAY better job with harmonies than I do - mine are very pedestrian and I'm only really good with fairly classical ones.
We'll be doing it on weekends, and the deadline is the end of the month so I am going to be out of commission for the next month - weekends are the time I smoosh everything in, including socialising, sleep, cleaning, and sanity regrowth. It'll be worth it. Maybe not for everybody else, though.
I love hanging out with her and the guys though, it's a lot of rollies, tea, wine, sometimes we don't jam for ages because we're just catching up. So this will need some discipline. As you can imagine, it's going to be interesting.
