Yves Tumor - Applaud ft. Hirakish & Napolian (Official Video)
Earlier this week Yves Tumor released a new song called “Applaud”, and it’s the first new song that they’ve released since their exceptional 2018 LP, Safe in the Hands in Love. “Applaud” is a dense, disparate sonic collage that’s far more reminiscent of SitHoL than their prior records. An elusive flute melody, wispy, wordless coos from Bowie, and french vocal samples weave their way through a clunky boom bap rhythm. Hirakish’s silky falsetto glides smoothly through the ensuing chaos while Bowie’s slithers unassumingly in the darkness. The groove that they lay into here is far more infectious than anything on SitHoL, and coupled with Hirakish’s tender crooning “I’ll kiss you nice for my baby/I’ll take a life for you lady “ “Applaud” reaches a level of heightened accessibility that Yves Tumor has never before come close to reaching. As the song reaches its conclusion a sample of a woman seeking guidance from god works its way atop the instrumental, with everything receding into silence immediately afterwards while leaving a lingering uncertainty over whether or not her prayers are ever answered. “Applaud” doesn’t contort pop music as brilliantly as anything on SitHol, but it’s still another immensely satisfying song from one of the most consistently confounding experimental pop auteurs currently recording.
