Does Cap'n write "Seiros" as "Serios" as like a way of demeaning it because it's not worthy of being named properly, like an intentional typo like his insistent use of "Agarthians" over "Agarthans" despite being flat out wrong. Or is it just, like, a typo that pops up more often than not. Because, not even exclusive to 3H, one of the fastest ways to take me out of a fic is the author writing names and terms wrong constantly in a work. Especially when it's a voiced term, like damn, man.
Oh, funny thing about that lol
Serios is a legit typo, from my knowledge. I know it's childish of me, but I always chuckle when it pops up - nothing against Cap'n here, it's an honest mistake, it's just a funny typo. Line up for your bowl of Seri'os lmaooo
But Agarthians is not a typo, at least in the traditional sense. It's not a "mistake" but Cap'n writing what he thinks is more "linguistically correct" because he thinks Agarthans isn't right. I think his reasoning was something about how there's, like, too many consecutive "a" sounds in Agarthans? So he "corrects" it to Agarthians. The example he uses to explain this is "we don't say Canadans, we say Canadians."
Which, uh, considering that my auto-correct literally thinks that it's Agarthans that's the correct spelling and not Agarthians, meaning it's not just the game's writers that spell it like that, there's one mark of him being wrong. Another is that, again, this follows the thinking that there's a consistent rule in linguistics and that it isn't a damn near free-for-all. Why do Italy and Brazil both get the "-ian" suffix, if they have a different number of syllables and if one ends in the strong E sound and the other in the soft I sound? Why is it "British" and "Spanish" and not "Britainians/Britainans" or "Spainians/Spainans"? Why the hell does Denmark become Danish, shit that barely resembles the country of origin?
The short answer is that language literally couldn't give less of a fuck about following any set rules about anything. Each of these places and nationalities are (likely) named what they are based on a broadly individual basis, which, uh, isn't exactly conducive to a hard-set rule system. And even if there was any set rules, you know what pretty much all languages have in common? There's always an exception to rules. So even if we allow for the idea that Agarthan "doesn't follow linguistic rules," it can literally just say "lol bitch I don't count." Like, think about why the hell words like bologna and laugh are pronounced they way they are, or how infamously incorrect the "i before e" rule is; language is fucky as hell trying to pin down (which is why it's so fun to learn about lol), so seeing him say that Agarthans "isn't correct" is kinda funny lmao
