Another area of rising tension between parents and children is children”s use of newmedia in the home.The introduction of a wide range of media gadgets into the home has prompted renegotiations of household relationships between children and parents.These renegotations have been complicated by the uncertainties and disagreements which surround the rights and responsibilities of children.The growth in home based media use by children has coincided with the rise of youth centre media and a screen rich bedroom culture.Today adolescents spend significant amounts of their leisure tine in the privacy of bedrooms,rather than in communal family space,through the solitary use of newmedia.In this private space,children are more likely to be in communication with a virtual,outside world beyond the home,through the internet,than with adult members of their own household.Parents often joke that they have to text their children to gain their attention at mealtime.The solitary use of media gadgets by children and teenagers seems to indicate an individualization of media use in the home and a fragmentation of domestic leisure between young people and adults.New patterns of family association are being identified ,described as “living together but separately”. Emergent types of interaction and regulation in households are being created by parents who feel obliged to restrict the extent to which their children use phones,computers ,the internet,video games etc.
