noooooo the tower of fools translation took away one of my favorite little moments :( :( :( :(

here :( the water pole, speaking to reynevan wasn't telling him to say a tongue twister, but a shibboleth: instead of "she sells seashells on the seashore" he orders him to say "soczewica, koło, miele, młyn" (lit. lentil, wheel, grinds, mill) which is NOT a tongue twister!!!! that was a legitimate shibboleth used by poles in 14th century after one uprising or another, to identify and kill germans and german-speakers.

what Reynevan says back to him, is "stół z powyłamywanymi nogami" (lit. table with the legs broken off), which is. just a tongue twister. because he's obnoxious and wants to prove to a random polish guy he met that he speaks polish better than him LMFAO

having this just being two tongue twisters (unless "she sells seashells by the seashore" is also a shibboleth? to my knowledge it's not) takes a lot from this imo :( instead of "say this correctly or im leaving you here to die" it gets this "you must answer my riddles three" vibe. :(

I'm rereading The tower of fools /Narrenturm (the 1st tome of Hussite Trylogy) after playing KCD and OMG I'M HAVING SO MUCH FUN. Thank god there was no KCD when I was a kid because I would go insane

It's not really a surprise because it's my favourite book series, but I'm literally thinking 'huh what would Henry do here?' and damn, him and Reynevan could actually get on quite well.

Also, I think Szarlej and Father Goodwin are pretty much the same person, and I LOVE it

(I had the biggest crush on Szarlej after reading the book for the first fime at like 12... I can remember talking with girls my age about our 'book husbands' and amongst Cardans and Kaz Brekkers I tried to explain that my crush is this banished priest... he might not be a priest but we don't know, and he's a good thieve and a fighter and he bullies the main character or occasionally threatens him and we don't really know his real name but he's got green eyes and-)

It was pretty much my way of surviving primary school, thinking that hell yeah, if Szarlej or Urban Horn another crush were in this situation (a talk with a teacher) they would just lie and do what they want anyway – it worked every time.

I finished the first Hussite Trilogy book (the tower of fools) and really enjoyed it despite it being hard to follow at times but one thing I was surprised of is that there no fan fiction of this series, none

That surprised me because while this is definitely like 100 times less popular than the Witcher I expected something in Polish or Czech at least because there is some fanart of it on Tumblr

But I typed in both the Polish and English names of both the series and the main character into google with “fanfiction” and “Ao3” and I got nothing

There is so much niche stuff that has fan fiction and this being nowhere to be found on Ao3 is so weird to me

It’s probably on some defunct Polish website from the early 2000s that can only be found with the wayback machine

finally finished Narrenturm / Tower of Fools by Andrzej Sapkowski. not as fun as Witcher but with lots of interesting historical facts (I've learned that there wasn't just the one defenestration of Prague but two)
