On the 21st of June, nineteen years ago, Brown Eyed Girls released their second digital single, I Am Summer Vol. 1. (Still waiting for Vol. 2 btw, it's never too late!)
I Am Summer Vol. 1 features a breezy mix of R&B and summer-inspired melodies. Led by the track “Oasis” featuring Lee Jae Hoon, the release captures Brown Eyed Girls' early vocal-driven style with warm, laid-back arrangements and a refreshing seasonal atmosphere.
Which Is Your Favourite "I Am Summer Vol. 1" Track?
there's no english subs on this video so here are my favorite tidbits from narsha and jea goofing around! only first half of the video because i'm eepy :3 translations by meeee, do with them what u want just don't claim as your own
gain, the richest high schooler
jea: back then, do you remember?
narsha: the practice room?
jea: what's it called? modern?
narsha: modern!!!
jea: modern house
narsha: back then as soon as we finished practice we went out to eat and everyone had to pay for their own meal
jea: that's right
narsha: we calculated it fairly because we had no money back then
jea: back then, gain had the most money and she was a high schooler
narsha: it's because she received pocket money
jea: we were just trainees, how the hell should we have had money
narsha: so gain had her pocket money but we-
jea: why are we suddenly having a bad conscience??
j&n: 😂😂😂
jea, narsha's savior
narsha: have i ever spoken about this? the savior of my life is her, kim hyojin
jea: even if you haven't been saying this, i have
narsha (laughing): seriously? "i'm her saviour" you've been saying that?
jea: maybe not saviour but whenever i told our story people said "so you saved narsha" and i was like "that's right"
narsha: right, right. but seriously, if there had been no kim hyojin, we wouldn't be filming this narshot right now. the first time we met was in high school. senior class?
jea: yes, senior class
narsha: back then i briefly went to a music hakwon and jea had already been there with a friend, i just briefly came in, happened to introduce myself to the friend who said "jea is looking for members"
jea: when i was looking for our team, the height was a factor
narsha: 😩
jea: 160cm was just too tall. but there were barely any not-too-tall people who are also good at singing
narsha: 😂😂😂 that's right
jea: so suddenly i was like "ah! that hyojin (narsha) from back then, what's she doing!?"
narsha: all of a sudden she contacted me through that common friend and was like "come to the audition". i went to the audition after working at my part time job at a clothes store. so if jea hadn't remembered me back then, i would have never had this chance
jea: there would be no brown eyed girls
narsha: no brown eyed girls.
jea: to add to this - i really had some influence
narsha: when?
jea: when putting BEG together. i'm telling you now, when you auditioned, your voice had that something. it had rnb. korean rnb. so i did a lot of convincing.
narsha: seriously?!
jea: seriously. but the producer back then and i were really close, so we felt like we found a jewel.
narsha: wow, so you really did have some influence
jea: my talking skills are no joke
narsha: what the~~ well thank youuu
brown eyed girls, faceless singers
narsha: the team first consisted of jea and miryo. then i auditioned and then right after that gain auditioned. back then we didn't know, but the company wanted us to debut without revealing our faces. "faceless singers" what does that even mean?!
jea: our faces were flawless, why debut without them?!
narsha: we had almost finished recording and suddenly they said "you're gonna debut as faceless singers". "why faceless?" we thought
jea: the members looked like they felt betrayed by me
the terror of bad lighting
jea: when i watched our very first debut stage, i wanted to quit singing
narsha: seriously!! the lighting on stage was pure horror!! it came from below us. especially on jea's part of the stage it came from below right to her chest.
jea: we were so depressed
narsha: we looked like ghosts
jea: when we removed our makeup, it was all okay
narsha: we were pretty!
jea: we were! but the makeup made us look like completely different people. and then on top, because of the lighting, we looked really ugly. that's why they wanted faceless singers.... but that was not the case!
narsha: we had no experience back then and didn't know any better, we didn't know what kind of makeup they would put on us. so we were depressed because we thought we didn't do well, it was our fault. i wanted to say maybe we should have been faceless singers.
