What The Fact…. December 11, 1998. - “Houston, We Have a Problem…” On this day, NASA scientists launched the Mars Climate Orbiter on a nine-month journey to study the Martian climate. It was doomed before it even left the ground. Unknown to NASA at the time, one of the engineering teams working on the project had performed its trajectory calculations using English units (pounds-seconds) while another team had used metric units (newton-seconds). When the Orbiter reached the Red Planet a year later, it skimmed too close to the atmosphere and disintegrated.
