Hii!! Long time silent reader and I just joined your Patreon too finally :) I just wanted to say I really admire and enjoy your work. Your ability to make your writing feel believable and natural while still being engaging and tangible is something I really appreciate!! I think it really shines in Anatomy of a Vampire! I also have to ask…as a vet med professional myself, are you a vet med professional?? I’m so impressed (and have been suspicious since Drown for You that you might be in the field) that you consistently get ‘hidden’ or small details right! If not, kudos to your research and aptitude to make believe decisions in your work!! Amazing job!!!

Sorry this is so late, i've been so busy and honestly exhausted 😭 but ahhh!! Omg? Thank you so much!! I'm definitely just a nerd lol i've always been an animal person (horse girl + dogs, first and foremost) but when i had to decide what i wanted to do, i decided to keep animals as a hobby. 😅 so while i've studied canine behavioral biology, my degree is in ai actually

I do a LOT of research for aoav but it's mostly for the very in depth things like what things look like under microscope and on ultrasound (i've had my own heart ultrasounded so a lot is from own experience too) and trying to see what things could go together?? Like if he lives on blood then that means a lot of iron and if he's still superhumanly strong then maybe those work together? And are there animals who are warmer than us and what other traits and problems do they face? So it's definitely like laying a big ass puzzle and trying to make some parts believable (and keeping others that i'm not as confident in, deliberately vague lol. It's one reason i had the bag rip while he was doing the isometric hold... i'm just not sure what would be a "plausible" time for him to hold that? like where is the line between reasonably superhuman and just straight up fantasy?? 😅)

The other things like canine hip dysplasia, canine/feline nutrition, colic in horses and whatnot are just things i know because i'm a nerd. While i can grade hip dysplasia pretty well on radiographs, i'm still learning elbows but that's MUCH trickier 😅

I used to always watch those vet programs on tv when i was little and i was OBSESSED with "inside nature's giants" that i saw on youtube when i was a teenager?? Where they dissect these big animals lol. the thing she does with his fingers/the "party trick" (on patreon) as she calls it, i learned from there, actually! It's in the one where they dissect a lion/tiger. And the small details i included about sharks (eyes and teeth) at the start i think i learned from the episode where they dissect a great white!

It's so interesting that you suspected it since dfy (and i take that as a huuge compliment!!😭♥️🤩💕❤️) because i'm definitely a science-interested person so i remember doing a little research for dfy too, just to keep it "realistic", but definitely not as much as for aoav! Thank you! ♥️♥️♥️

Regarding the car question, I used to have a Toyota Camry and upgraded to a KIA Soul and I love both!! The KIA is def my favorite though, it has a lot of benefits of an SUV (which I wanted) but is compact like a car! People are always surprised how much fits in there 😂 Also, I won’t go into unnecessary detail but it’s a very safe and durable car (crash tasted by moi). 😌

omg thank you for such a sweet and thoughtful response to my question 🥹!! Honestly I’m surprised to know you aren’t in the veterinary medicine field but even more impressed now!! I remember reading Drown for You and thinking “hmm that’s interesting they either have a lot of interest in animals or they work in the field” and then coming to AOAV I was like OKAY this is such an improvement in technical knowledge, I have to know 👀. You truly have skill for making broad and complicated technical ideas digestible and interesting!!

To answer, the ‘hidden details’ that tipped me off were:

- mentioning at home services for the clinic being typically for end of life care, and rare in the town. This is incredibly true! Especially in rural areas! It immediately clued me into not only the cultural landscape but the possible societal implications as well!

- during the isometric hold scene, the specific mention of the weight of the bag of food being 22 lbs. At this point I was CONVINCED. A few years ago in the field one of the major 3 prescription diet manufacturers changed their bag sizing to a very specific weight (22 lbs).

- the mention of theobromine when a chocolate ingestion was brought up!! We often talk about the fact that we need to factor in caffeine and theobromine toxicity as well as chocolate into ingestions for pets so I was surprised to see it there! 🥹

- when Jungkook and fmc talked about cats diets, and their need for wet food! Diets is a huge part of preventative care and how we advocate for pets so it was another time I said ‘hmm… very interesting’

Truly reading the scientific possibilities of a vampire is so much fun to me!! You make it so believable and I’m having so much fun with it!! For the setting, i'm really just imagining a random small town, and even though i live in a big town (a capital lol), we don't have many vets that do "home" visits besides for livestock and whatnot but i've heard of people mostly booking them for euthanasias so i'm mostly basing that of my own environment!

For the bag, that's really just a coincidence i think 😅 because i operate in metric so i was like "okay 10 kgs is good for that test, what is that in lbs because i want to include it if it's not too weird since many use lbs" and it happens to be 22 lbs lol, but i can imagine that "22" is much more specific for you than "10" is for us over here. The brand, is it purina? 🤔😅

The theobromine thing is pretty common to know for dog owners here, maybe it's a regional thing? People are relatively knowledgeable on what's bad for their dogs here and even how to calculate for different body weights and different types of chocolate! But i definitely double checked (and debated whether to include caffeine but decided it sounded to "formal") because i know most people aren't reading to learn about animals (🤣) but IF i can "educate" at the same time, especially regarding important stuff like toxic things then that's a bonus for me!

The cat food thing is just me being a nerd and following a lot of vets on social media that are passionate about car nutrition lol 😅 because i'm not really a cat person and i don't have that much experience with them but i've picked up a few things 🥸
