Drew this a few months ago, but held off on sharing it publicly for a while until recently, but for context's sake, this is the Snatcher, Natalie's hench-Zoner in the Chalked Up/Snapped Up AU tasked with delivering the chalk and any chalk-made materials to her and Skrawl. She can control it via her Chalkie Talkie remote, and when it blasts something, or someone, they will end up where the Chalkie Talkie happens to be, be it in ChalkZone or even in the Real World.

How Chalkification Works in the Chalked Up AU

Before I start, I’d like to bring of a couple things:

- I know I brought a lot of this up in the CZ Discord; I just wanted to share it here for those who don’t have a profile there (or use it that much) to know.

- Some of this stuff may be a bit dark, even emotionally upsetting, but I’d like to note that the AU does have an emotionally bittersweet feel to it. Yes, Rudy and Penny would most certainly be emotionally crushed by what's happened to them and the fact that they were trapped in ChalkZone forever, but with the help of Snap and the other Zoners, they'll find they're gonna be alright in the long run. Plus, five years after they've chalked up, an 8-year-old Sophie manages to find a piece of magic chalk and enters ChalkZone, where she finds Rudy and Penny and is simply happy to know that they're okay (albeit completely different now), while the two are beyond glad to see a friendly face from the Real World again. In general, the AU is about how your life may irrevocably change, but you should still look on the bright side of it all, because no matter how bad things can get, there are still positives you can find in the long run.

Now with all that said, you know how in @novastarlyght’s theoretical fifth season, the process isn't instantaneous and Kari manages to get out in time with just her right arm becoming chalk? Well, Rudy and Penny aren't that lucky here.

See, in the Chalked Up AU, it IS instantaneous, and the moment a human is in ChalkZone for literally a second more than 24 hours, they chalk up in a process that takes a minute or two but feels so shockingly painful that it feels like hours... especially if you're awake to experience it.

Once their bodies start turning to chalk, they begin to feel queasy before they cough up red chalk dust, which is actually where I believe the Red Chalk pieces come from, that they were the last remnants of one's physical humanity before they become Zoners. After their insides turn into chalk and they cough up the red chalk dust, a chalk outline would appear on their mouth and whatever body part they got it on and bleed out around the affected person to form a new body that they would be trapped in, and upon their formation the old body would shape-shift and contort to fit inside the new body. Once the chalkification (another term for chalking up) reaches its conclusion, the newly-transformed Zoner is left to heal from the process, which takes hours physically but will leave everlasting mental scars.

For some, they might end up looking relatively the same as they did when they were human, but in other cases, like in Rudy's and especially Penny's, how they'll look as Zoners might not only look radically different, often times it makes the process more excruciating to go through.

As for the red chalk dust they cough up, it sinks into the ground and finds its way to the mines where it grows into a piece of Red Chalk. This is based on a theory someone brought up that the Red Chalk was made of the blood of past children and it represented their recklessness. Oh! And Red Chalk is still connected to human-turned-Zoners, so that Zoner would whither in pain if ever the piece they coughed up was in use.

I should mention as well that Rudy and Penny chalked up after Skrawl made a plan to keep them in ChalkZone for over 24 hours after he found out from Barney the Encyclipedia. See, when he had the Beanie Boys kidnap Barney for his previous plan, one event after another led to him asking the encyclocentipedia what would happen to something or someone from the Real World if they stayed in ChalkZone for too long. He would also pass this info down to Natalie as they were setting up this plan.

Also, in the AU’s story, a few days after chalking up, Rudy would go into the Impenetrable Forest to visit Barney and ask about a cure for chalkification. As Barney explains, the good news is there's a fountain in Chalklantis that restores the person or object that had chalked up to its original state before the process had taken part. The bad news is you have to be able to use Magic Chalk to find Chalklantis in the first place.

It's that detail that makes Rudy, who had wanted to find some way to de-chalk himself and Penny, realize that not only was their long-planned adventure to the fabled city no longer possible now that they were both made of chalk (barring the slim chance that a human they could be able to trust finds some Magic Chalk and enters ChalkZone), but with no way to return to the Real World or even use the Magic Chalk, they were stuck as Zoners for the rest of their lives.

Now, for how the Chalklantis fountain works, a Zoner who had become such from getting chalkified could take a drink out of it, and presto, they're human again! BUT... it would only work once, and if they chalked up once more, the second time it would be permanent.
