Sometimes we imagine white sharks only hunting in the open blue of the ocean or launching breach attacks from the deep. However, their most susceptible prey are the new seal and sea lion pups who are just venturing from shore for the first time, or that are swept out to sea by a large wave. With that in mind it is actually common to see white sharks patrolling close to shore, and in Andrew Fox's case, he's actually seen these predations take place deep in the bay of the Neptune Islands of South Australia. Other locations where this has been witnessed include South Africa and Cape Cod. The first clip from my visit with the Natal Sharks Board invites you to ask these questions. Twenty two white sharks (according to their own records) were caught the year of this interview. That's a very high number for such a vulnerable species with a low reproductive rate. How many were found already dead and how many were found alive? Of those found alive how many survived after release? Every year provides increased evidence that white sharks have a low post-release survivability rate which infers that even the ones released alive likely did not survive. This means the Natal Sharks Board was the biggest known killer of white sharks in South Africa that year and possibly the world. But they tag the sharks they catch...so does that make them a conservation company? Monsters Trailer 4: Part 1 I went through different stages as I learned about shark culling. First, was understanding what culling actually was and the methods used. After learning about the methods inevitably comes an understanding of the manner of death suffered by the captured animals. This leads to wondering which animals are captured and consequently suffer these prolonged deaths. Discovering how many different species are impacted leads to wondering what percent of the captured animals are targeted and non targeted. Which leads to wondering if shark culling accomplishes its goals at all. Even as more data comes in showing that South Africa's white shark population is dangerously low, the Natal Sharks Board continues to cull sharks in an area already documented as a migration route used by white sharks. In South Africa, the first country to list the white shark as a protected species, a government supported operation continues to be the number one killer of that same species in that same country. Thank you to Shark Diving Unlimited and others who worked hard to collect data to show the migration routes of these animals in 2001.
