Art is definitely one of the worst on this mostly because it can encompass basically any way of looking at and interpreting the world. One of my friends is a curator and one of her shows was titled with such an obscure word one of the artists *in the show* later said to me that she didn’t know what it meant

this reminds me of being in uni an d having to write short artists statement for the end of year degree show, and I read some of my fellow classmates like...you are literally just pulling words out of your arse. Some made absolutely no sense I’m not even sure what they were trying to say their work was about. It’s truly hideous. I said as much to the tutors. Also why I hate writing statements about work because why do I paint? because I like it. There’s absolutely no deeper philosophical reason to it. I like blue so I use blue, etc. I deeply wish people could feel free to do that with their own artwork as well as when they speak about it. If you like it say that, if you don’t that’s fine. You don’t need to push out this ridiculous multi-polysyllabic wank like you swallowed a thesaurus.

One of my favourite moments from past gallery stewarding was this little girl who, upon her dad saying he didn’t understand a painting, she just said serenely ‘I think it’s beautiful’. I nearly stood up and cheered.
