Cowardice.
It was an unfamiliar feeling, and Verity found herself trying to dull the shame in countless shots downed throughout the party, all while hiding from the one reason she had chosen to attend in the first place.
Despite his face paint, she’d spotted Nate Blackwood as soon as she’d stepped into the party, as if her heart was a compass that would always point back to him. She should have stepped up to him right then. Perhaps she should have even groveled for forgiveness. But apologies had always been a foreign concept to her, and instead, Verity had flitted throughout the party for most of the night, keeping him within eye sight but just out of reach, as if she could stave off the inevitable. She’d never been one to shy away from difficult confrontations, but it was different with him. With him, she knew it would hurt — would hurt them both.
It was a little after one that she found him outside and alone, cigarette between his lips and clumsily fumbling with a lighter.
Verity stepped up to him, stumbling slightly herself, a corner of her mouth turned upwards. “Not so great with your hands, after all,” she drawled, taking the cigarette away from him and tossing it to the ground. In terms of greetings, it wasn’t the best. In terms of apologies? It wasn’t one, but her alcohol-addled brain seemed to deem it good enough.
