The local beach had a place where Nathan often picked up Claire. Though it was mostly known for it's red rock views, his sister loved to go down to the swimming holes. No matter how many towels he brought or how long it took her to get to him, he spent the next three days following picking her up cleaning the sand out of truck. He could never imagine how there was any sand left at the swimming holes after she got out of his truck. When Nathan wanted to clear his head, he headed to Buddha Beach. While many areas in Sedona bustled with tourists, Buddha Beach was a hidden gem for many residents of the area.

When Nathan arrived, he made his way over the rocky terrain, Rook by his side. The Australian Shepherd loved to run into the water when they got down there. As he approached, Rook walking loosely on the leash, he spotted someone standing down there already. From behind, he thought that the other looked familiar, but he couldn't place her. Not until Nathan found himself looking at her face. He didn't know if he made enough noise for her to turn around or if she was getting ready to leave, but what he did know is that seeing her stopped him in his tracks. "Nadia?" He choked out her name as his feet felt like they had been caught in now dried cement.

location: the fire station

Nathan was working in the kitchen of the fire station. They'd got back from a call not that long ago, putting out a small kitchen fire before it got out of control. Hunger pushed him to get making a meal, making enough for anyone that might want some later in the day. He didn't know who was all still around and Rook was laying underneath the table, enjoying the coolness of the concrete. Nathan's mood settled comfortably as he worked on making a homemade mac and cheese.

After some time, he was mixing it up when the sound of other footsteps pulled his attention away. From the looks of it, the evening was settling around them. "Mav," he greeted the fellow fire fighter with a nod of his head, "got some food if you're hungry." While Nathan could often be a man of few words, he found that food brought people together. "I thought you would have headed home by now."

Rook looked at him from his spot on the couch. The dog's chin rested atop of his paws as Nathan made yet another sweep across his place. The floors were vacuumed, they were drying from being mopped and everything had found a tidy place. While Nathan wasn't particularly a disorganized person to begin with, keeping his belongings to a minimal for a reason, Mia was coming over and he wanted everything to be perfect. The take out he ordered had arrived mere moments before he heard a knock against his door. Rook's ears twitched, but he remained laying down as Nathan's long strides took him to the door.

As his hand wrapped around the handle of the door, the tension eased from his shoulders just knowing she was on the other side. Revealing her by opening the door, his attention settled onto her immediately. "Hi," he breathed the word, her standing there taking almost all the breath straight from his lungs. "Come in. The food just got here. You probably passed the delivery person on your way up." He let out a huff of laughter, letting Mia into his place. A quick glance to Rook was all the permission the dog needed as he slid off the couch and made his way over to Mia. The Australian Shepherd's hips were wiggling, "Careful, he will try to use tongue." Nathan quipped with a tug of his lips upward.

A day off left Nathan feeling restless. He'd already taken Rook on a five mile run in the morning. His dog was taking a nap and Nathan couldn't sit still, though he tried. While he turned on the television, his fingers drummed against his thigh, his foot tapped against the floor, but it nothing caught his attention long enough. After some time, he gave up with the television and cleaned his apartment from top to bottom and yet, even that didn't slow him down. The sun was beginning to set but Nathan knew that he would be able to finish a trail run in time. He got in his truck, drove to the state park and was halfway through when he spotted someone else. The sun was barely peaking out behind the rocks and his concern grew. Nathan knew these trails like the back of his hand and could walk them blindfolded. But, from a distance, he couldn't tell who the other was. "Excuse me," Nathan called out with worry coating his words, "are you okay?"

Nathan tracked weather systems that would roll through the Sedona area. It gave him a sense of control, even if he could do nothing to prevent them. What he could do was be there in the event that things went wrong. If hikers were caught in storms and swept off trails, if fires were started because of a lack of rain for quite some time. However, as he was out for a run with Rook, a storm caught him off guard. The downpour of rain was quick to soak him and the Australian Shepherd before he could get under an awning in front of a storefront. As he tugged the dog, gently with the leash and a click of his tongue under the awning, he almost stepped into someone else. The quick reroute of his step allowed him to miss but just barely. "Seems we had the same idea." Nathan's words fell from his lips, softly but lightheartedly. "I hadn't a clue that was going to roll through here this evening."

location: a local trailhead

Nathan and Rook had just finished a run on a local trailhead, just as the sun was dipping beneath the red rocks. His sweat was cooling quickly with the drop in desert temperatures. As he reached the parking lot, he noticed that it was empty besides his own truck. He doesn't think much of it, moving over to his truck where he pulls out a water bowl and dumps some water into it for Rook before taking a sip out of his own bottle. From across the lot he hears it. The sad sound of an engine trying to start and failing. Unable to help himself, Nathan called out, "Hey, you alright?" To him, it sounded like the vehicle's battery had gone and died, "I'm happy to take a look if you'd like."

location: on the rocks

Nathan found himself at On The Rocks after taking an evening walk with Rook. The Australian Shepherd was now peacefully asleep on the couch. Whiskey neat in hand, the regulars in conversation buzzed around him, but he wasn't paying much attention to anyone else. He was sitting at the bar, after having made small talk with the bartender to get his drink. For as long as he had been living in his home in Southpoint, he had been coming here, making himself one of the regulars as well. He wasn't sure how long he had been there, but he had not finished his first drink when the barstool next to him became occupied. His gaze shifted, meeting her own with a slight smile. "Evenin'. Lake, right?" He'd seen her around before, having talked to her a few times.

Nathan and Hera knew each other from the last three years. Their professionalism took a turn toward a friendship after rescuing a group of kids from the state park. Rightfully so, Nathan had been infuriated, more internally so, that they kids had intentionally endangered themselves. Today, was another day for the both of them. Nathan had been called out to help find some hikers that had wandered off the trail with the help some of the park rangers. "Up for a bite to eat?" As someone who didn't particularly love the company, he sure got a lot less looks when he had someone to eat with.
