The Nine Kittens of Christmas (2021, David Winning)
12/21/22
Josie Hughes (Chaley Rose) is a hopeless romantic who believes in the perfect meet-cute and is looking for a grand gesture to sweep her off her feet, just like she sees in the old black-and-white movies she loves. She also believes the wedding bouquet finds its way to the person next to wed when the bride tosses it, as proven by her aunt’s getting married unexpectedly weeks after catching it at a family wedding 20 years before. A tight trio of friends since college, Josie, Athena (Rebecca Olson) and Emma (Luisa d’Oliveira) are immersed in last-minute prep for Emma’s wedding to Ted (Thomas Cadrot). A fourth member of their group is Alex (Nathan Witte), also a good friend since college, who secretly carries a torch for Josie. Emma encourages him to tell her how he feels but Alex doesn’t want to risk the friendship. But when he reveals that he has a partially written letter for Josie, Emma notes that it’s the kind of gesture that would sweep their friend off her feet. Keeping with her family’s tradition, Josie creates a special bouquet for Emma, personalized to represent her and Ted’s love story. At the reception, Alex tries to step out of the friend zone with Josie but his plan is thwarted when she literally bumps into fellow guest Will (Jaime M. Callica), a charming, big-time lawyer who asks her to dance before Alex has the chance. As Josie and Will chat there are sparks but it’s time for the bouquet toss so her Maid of Honor duties take her away from him. Athena and Brian (Casey Manderson) have dated for two years and, knowing a proposal is imminent, Josie assures her the bouquet has a destiny to fulfill. But when Emma lets her flowers fly, the unthinkable happens – it bounces from one pair of outstretched hands to the next until it lands with Josie, much to her and Athena’s dismay. Despite the bungled bouquet toss, Athena soon becomes engaged. But when the planning doesn’t go as Athena anticipated and a series of mishaps ensues, Josie’s convinced the blame lies with the bouquet ending up in her hands instead of Athena, the intended. When a grand gesture by Will ensures he and Josie cross paths again the two begin to date. Happy to be dating someone who seems to be perfect, she encourages Alex to do the same and sets up his online dating profile. But as Josie and Will spend more time together she questions if he’s right for her, despite trying to convince herself that catching the bouquet led them to each other. Coupled with the twinge of jealousy she feels when Alex begins dating, these doubts help her realize that what she was looking for has been in front of her all along. Hurt and angry when she learns that Alex accepted a new job in Chicago, it seems like all is lost. But just as the bouquet knows who to find, love finds its way and there may still be a chance for Josie and Alex to have their movie moment and live happily ever after.
