Nathan can come across a little too serious especially towards people he didn't feel close to. Born and raised in Merrock, Nathan is the youngest child of Damian and Antonia Ames. He was an active and curious child, giving way too many 'why' and 'how' questions to his parents and older siblings, driving them crazy at times. He eventually learned that if he wanted to know about something, he should figure things out himself. Unfortunately, the things he most curious about are the mechanics of how things work. There were a lot of things that got destroyed as he tried to figure out why and how they work. As he got older though, he got better at putting them back together.
He's always been interested with heights, not finding it the least bit scary. That interest turned into passion, and after a flight or two with a family friend who owned a small plane, he not just learned how planes worked, he learned how to fly them as well. When he was old enough, he was able to get a pilot license even before he got his driving license.
He left town to pursue a degree in engineering. When his family learned what he wanted to do, none of them were surprised. It seemed logical for him to take that course. What they weren't prepared for was for him to tell them that he'd be joining the NAVY as a pilot. They were prepared, and wouldn't be the least bit surprised, to be told that he wanted to fly. They just didn't think he'd join the military to do so. Despite that, they were supportive of his choice.
Nathan had been with the NAVY for a decade when he made the decision to apply to NASA, which he got accepted to after passing the test. He remained with NASA, as pilot and engineer, until he moved back to Merrock in 2020 after a discussion with his family. His youngest child had just been born the year before and they agreed that moving back to his hometown could be beneficial to them as a family.

Nathan can come across a bit serious to those he feels that he's not close to. He tries to separate home and work and one of the ways he does it is to act differently. After a while, how he is at work sometimes bleeds to how he interacts with people, especially to people he barely knows, something his family try to remind him about. When he told his parents that he wanted to leave town to study engineering, his parents weren’t surprised. Their surprise came a little later when Nathan informed them that he had joined Naval ROTC and that he wanted to join the Navy. They didn’t really think too much of it, the Navy needed engineers too, so they hoped he’d be assigned somewhere ‘safe’. They weren’t expecting to be told that he’d go to flight school after he finished his degree, saying that the more he learned about how planes worked, the more he wanted to fly them instead of designing them.
After he got his wings, Nathan was stationed at a base in San Diego for a few years before then getting assigned to an aircraft carrier. He married his long term partner a few months prior to him being transferred. By the time his latest tour ended, he had a young kid that he rarely saw. After discussing it with his wife, he decided not to return. He went back to school to study law then transferred to JAG Corps in Washington DC. Not long after the birth of his youngest child, he and his family made the decision to move to Merrock. They were hoping the different pace and environment would get them even closer as a family.
