Personal anecdote about being being a native girl who looks like a white girl
So, recessive genes; I have them.
I'm blonde and blue-eyed and fair-skinned. That's what everybody wants to be, right? The fucking American dream or some shit.
Except that I feel bad every time I buy shampoo to enhance my blonde hair because I hate that blonde hair is a "white girl thing". I don't want to dye my hair darker because then it's like I'm pretending to look like Native Americans typically do when, in actuality, I look like I'm from fucking Sweden.
When I buy foundation I hate that I'm buying the shades marked "light to medium".
I'm supposed to thankful that I can blend in to the white majority.
Well, I'm not. I'm not a fucking white girl and I don't want to look like one. I'm tired of being associated with oppression. I'm tired of having to tell people I'm not white. I'm tired of being expected to laugh at racist jokes when people assume that I'm white. I'm tired of people acting like I'm just some white girl trying to claim minority status because it's "cool".
The number of racial stereotypes a lot of white people will agree with when they think they're in a room full of only white people is incredible. It's also incredible how many people will look around awkwardly but not actually call someone out for it. Or the amount of people who will stay quiet or tell you "he/she wasn't talking about all [fill in the blank] people" when you call someone out.
But the really fucked up thing is that looking white has given me this weird pseudo-"white guilt". Every time I'm around other "minorities", I feel like I have to let them know that I'm not actually white. Because I don't want to be associated with the discrimination that my blonde hair and blue eyes have allowed me to witness behind, what are assumed to be, closed doors.
Fuck.
K, well, I'm gonna go use my new "tone-enhancing" shampoo now and maybe lighten my hair another shade because it brings out my "I'll kill your people and then blame it on you" eye color.
This has been a racially-charged rant/post.
