Nathan’s eyes wander up and down Sterling’s frame for a moment, lingering and irritably appreciative, before their gazes meet. Sterling isn’t sure if his heart seems to be beating this quickly because he just finished his nighttime run or if it’s because Nathan is here so unexpectedly.
“What are you doing here…?” Sterling asks, yanking one earbud out of his ear, wiping the sweat off his forehead with the back of his wrist.
Nathan leans back on his heels. “You could have told me you were back in town. Hell, you could have told me you left town. Three months ago, you know, when you left.”
Sterling shoulders past Nathan and his beat up car parked outside the gates of Sterling’s house. “You could have called to ask.” His frustration comes out bitingly as he tugs the other earbud from his ear. “You had my number.”
“You told Vera.”
@veraandalyn Natling aesthetic
"Please stay." Natling, please~
Nathan laughs. “Haha, dude, you’re a dick.”
Sterling rolls his eyes, but he can’t hide the smile that curls at his lips. “Why?”
“Because you’re filthy rich. Obviously.”
Sterling snorts at that explanation. “Isn’t your dad a pilot or something?”
As if on cue, Nathan’s mother - a brown, curly-haired woman with freckles and laugh lines at the corner of her eyes - knocks on the open door with her knuckles. “We’re leaving now. Do you boys need anything before we go?” she asks with a warm smile.
Sterling is always struck by how thoughtful Mrs. Kearney is. His own mother dotes on him, and loves him truly, but she is selfish to the core and does things that serve her best interest. Mrs. Kearney is the opposite, Sterling has noticed. He’s never felt so welcomed in by anyone who wasn’t his own flesh and blood, and even that isn’t a hard bar to pass.
“Nah, I think we’re good, Mom,” Nathan replies happily, shuffling the deck of cards on the table before him. “Thanks. Have fun.”
“Don’t stay up too late,” she reminds him sternly. “You do have school tomorrow.” She waves at both boys before pulling away from the door and walking away. Moments later, the sound of the front door shutting echoes through the now empty house.
Suddenly, Sterling is very aware of how alone they are.
“I should go,” he says, breaking the silence.
There is only a space of a breath before Nathan earnestly replies. “Please stay.”
Sterling’s heart presses against his ribcage.
“I mean,” Nathan continues, not making eye contact as he flips mindlessly through the cards, teeth teasing his lower lip, “you don’t have to. If you can’t. Or if you don’t want to. Whatever.”
“I -”
“Would your parents even noticed?” he asks, and every word out of his mouth makes Sterling’s chest tighten. “Would they care? If you stayed?”
“I don’t know.” Sterling replies, tearing his gaze away from the curling, auburn hair and the scattered freckles, the green eyes framed by long, dark eyelashes. He stares down at his homework, gently closing one of the textbooks left open. His thoughts are too muddled to make sense of, which frustrates him. Sterling has always known how to use words, but right now, they are useless.
“You don’t have to stay,” Nathan says, giving Sterling a half-assed smile. “Sorry I said anything.”
OKAY I SAW THE ANON ASK BEFORE YOUR REPLY AND I WAS JUST "NATHAN!!!" And then you agreed and !!! Also imagine Nathan introducing Sterling to KP (Nat has the whole series + movie on CD) and them just sitting huddled up on the couch, Nathan with stars in his eyes, can't stop smiling as he gushes about the characters/plot and Sterling just being "oh shit he's cute when he's excited and this show is really awesome."
nathan wants them to be kim and ron for halloween
sterling opposes this for MONTHS but on oct. 31st they show up to vera’s party dressed like kim and ron. sterling’s hair is carefully mussed and had 3 drawn on freckles on his cheeks. nathan makes him carry a plush rufus in his pocket. nathan walks around with a hairdryer attached to his belt and says things like “whats the sitch” and “so not the drama” literally all night im crying
"Can I tell you a secret?” Veralyn or Natling?
Sterling plays with the water in his glass, shaping out stars and hearts in mindless, flowing patterns, matching them to the lull of his breath. Nathan watches on in fascination, the sound of the pause screen on his video game chiming in the background.
Sterling feels warm under Nathan’s attention, especially when the freckled red-head whispers, “That’s awesome,” under his breath.
“This is nothing,” Sterling promises in a gentle undertone, flustered by the wonderment.
“Dude, this is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.” Nathan pauses and then amends with, “Well, the coolest, non-scary thing I’ve ever seen. Which is, y’know, kind of a big deal.”
Sterling wonders what he means by that, if the look in Nathan’s eyes can be interpreted the way Sterling wants to interpret it. The water drops back into his glass, rippling the surface with a sudden violence before it calms again into something stagnant.
“Can I tell you a secret, Nat?” Sterling asks, his eyebrows furrowing as an unexpected blush blooms under his skin.
Nathan smiles and reaches for the chip bag. “You can tell me anything, Captain.”
Sterling rolls his eyes at the nickname, but his resolve doesn’t waver. “I’ve never told anyone this before.” He glances down and stares at the golden cuff on his wrist, running his thumb over the engraved C power class. It tells the world that he has and ability that is neither inherently dangerous or helpful.
“And you wanna tell me?” Nathan grins as he munches on a chip.
“You’re the only one I can tell.”
“Oh, a top secret secret.” Nathan’s green eyes go alight with a strange emotion Sterling can’t put a finger on.
“Yeah.”
Nathan waits expectantly. Sterling has the distinct feeling he knows what he’s about to say.
“I like you,” Sterling says.
Nathan’s eyes flutter closed as he pushes the chips away from him. “Ah.”
Sterling’s heart is hammering. “Ah? That’s all you have to say?”
A nervous peel of laughter answers him. “You caught me off guard. I was hoping but. . . I didn’t think you’d ever -”
“Well, I do.” A lot. More than Sterling knows he should ever like someone.
Nathan crosses his arms in front of him and drops his face into the cradle. Sterling feels himself crack a smile and leans in, resting his shoulder against Nathan.
“Sorry I couldn’t say it sooner,” Sterling says softly.
Nathan laughs and turns his head to look up at him, his expression hazy and content and red with a blush. “Better late than never.”
