persona detective naoto novel interview stuff
imma be real w/you all -- i kinda skimmed the detective naoto novel translation years ago and was not super duper interested in it lol. i recently read a couple interviews w/the author, natsuki mamiya, in persona magazine. it was interesting to read stuff like his thought process behind giving naoto a new persona, but then he (and also shuji sogabe) just killed the vibe by talking about naoto and rise's photo shoot.
atlus had proposed a persona novel project to dengeki bunko. (in a 2008 p4 interview, hashino mentions they usually receive proposals, so this is quite different.)
during the planning meetings, hashino thought that because naoto joined later in the game, she wasn't quite as developed as the other characters, so she became the mc of this novel project.
mamiya wrote the gravure idol photo shoot w/rise and naoto because He Likes That then backtracks and says noooo jk, it was to demonstrate that naoto is not a guy but a crossdressing girl. (i think it'd be less cringe if he just admitted to being a gooner.)
at the start of p4, naoto believes she has to solve mysteries by herself. mamiya gave naoto a new persona, amatsumikaboshi, with the power to enhance others to demonstrate how naoto grew past that and learned to work as a team / with others.
genesis / sosei being able to transform into a motorcycle is something that hashino pushed on mamiya, and mamiya had to re-tool parts of the story. (tho his cmt was he thinks it's better off for it.)
mamiya hesitated about writing like... a background story for sosei cause it meant he was expanding on the persona world building himself. but during meetings w/the persona team, they were like, super into what he had cooked up for sosei, and gave him feedback on how to make it even more interesting.
mamiya was given some details about p4 arena ahead of its release which he incorporated into the novel.
from early talks, mamiya wanted to get some illustrations for the novel drawn by sogabe. the gravure photo shoot being a 2 page spread in the book was something that sogabe asked if he could do. mamiya thinks it has a lot of impact cause its the first illustration pages in the book.
both sogabe and mamiya were surprised by soejima's design for older naoto w/the really long hair. from the design, mamiya got the impression it was something soejima was really particular about it.
btw, i have flipped through some jp reviews of pdn on the jp equivalent of good reads, and many fans seemed to have liked it, but they complained about there being a lot of typos; i assume the wrong kanji were used multiple times. dunno if the fan translator has ever talked about that.
Already Task. 24 is off to a great start because of this moment-
