The First American Flag Hoisted in Great Britain was on The Ship Bedford, Capt. Moores, of Nantucket.

She arrived at the Downs February 3, 1783, passed Grayesend the 4th, and was reported at the Custom House on the 5th.

A London journal of 1783 states that she was not allowed regular entry until some consultation had taken place between the commissioners of the customs and the lords of council, on account of the many acts of parliament yet in force against the rebels in America.

She is loaded with 487 butts of whale oil, is American built, manned wholly by American seamen, wears the rebel colors, and belongs to the Island of Nantucket in Massachusetts.

This is the first vessel which has displayed the thirteen rebellious stripes in any British port. The vessell is at Horesley-down, a little below the tower, and is intended immediately to return to New England.

The Little-Known Nantucket-British Deal of 1814 | JSTOR Daily

Remembering a strange chapter of history when Nantucket allied itself with Great Britain.

At the beginning of the war, the British Navy imposed a blockade on the American seaboard, except for the New England coast. They were hoping to encourage anti-war Federalists in New England. This didn’t help the island all that much, though. In 1814, the British began to blockade New England, and Nantucket was completely cut off.

Conditions on the island grew dire. Nantucketers, both Democratic-Republicans and Federalists alike, decided to put themselves under British protection in a last-ditch effort to get ships moving to and from the island.

We opted to paint out the heavy wall paneling in the family room, maintaining the richly-toned wood beams overhead. The result is dramatic, graphic and fresh. 

 A combination of simply-sculpted furnishings and touches of finer heirloom pieces along with a contrast of rustic and contemporary elements infuses this space with a collected and 'developed-over-time'  character.
