Surf's Up!
pairing/s: Satoru Gojo x fem!reader
synopsis: you and your boyfriend watch Surf's Up one night and he decides he wants to be a surfer.
warnings/tags: au - no trauma
“Cody is so me, don’t you reckon?” Satoru says out of the blue whilst you are watching ‘Surf’s Up’ on his couch.
You turn to glance at him, furrowing your brow. “I mean I see some resemblance, but you can’t surf? Unless you have a secret skill you have been hiding under your sleeve,” you chuckle faintly at the thought.
He raises his eyebrows, holding a hand to his chest in mock offense. “You just assume I have no skill? You could be dead wrong!” Satoru turns away from you with a scoff and you roll your eyes at his dramatics.
“Yeah, yeah. Alright, I could be dead wrong,” you smile a little, turning back to the movie. The room falls quiet again, little do you know just what Gojo is planning silently.
The next day:
And when you woke up you found yourself in the passenger seat of your own car, your boyfriend driving, dressed in board shorts and an unbuttoned blue button-up with pineapples wearing sunglasses as the print.
In the back of the car were three bags full of food, drinks, sunscreen, a beach ball, Yuji Itadori and Megumi Fushiguro.
The puzzle pieces click and you go from staring dumbly at the two boys in the backseat to glaring at the man driving. “What the hell?” You ask, gesturing to the whole situation.
“Whaaaat?” Gojo responds while shrugging, his tone coy. “Don’t play dumb with me” you snap back, turning down the stereo.
“Why are you dressed like the secondary love interest of some high school drama show on the summer special?” You groan, pressing the heels of your hands to your eyes, sinking into your seat.
Satoru’s smile falters into something of confusion as he relays your words in his head. “Um, first of all, I don’t know what to think of that statement. Second of all! We’re going to the beach! I’m gonna prove to you that I am Cody, and he is me” He nods, sounding satisfied with himself.
You take a deep breath to stop yourself from rolling your eyes again, opting to just shake your head instead. “Fine, yeah. How about the two teenagers you abducted in the backseat?” You ask, turning around to look at Yuji and Megumi.
“Yuji wanted to learn how to surf, I thought I’d teach him with my sick skills,” he shrugs confidently. “Yuji didn’t want to be alone so I brought Megumi.”
Yuji beams when you look at him, waving enthusiastically. “Hi Miss Gojo-sensei’s girlfriend!” He grins. You chuckle and wave back.
Megumi is as quiet as usual, looking less annoyed than you can imagine he would’ve been at the start of the trip and more accepting of his predicament. “Hello,” he greets you politely. Always with the formalities as if you haven’t known the kid since he was a young’in.
You reciprocate greetings before turning back in your seat.
Once arriving at the beach, you’re pleased to see it is not at all busy, at least Satoru picked a good spot. The waves are big enough to achieve his dream of surfing, but not so big it’s daunting for a beginner like Itadori. They’re smooth, blue waves with yellow, invitingly warm sand.
“This looks… really nice actually,” You murmur, carrying one of the three bags towards the beach umbrella Satoru had already set up. He’s practically beaming.
Well, at least he’s happy.
Megumi looks anything but, Yuji tugs at his arm and pulls him towards the water with one of the three surfboards Gojo brought. Both of them seem so eager to get out and surf, while you think it's funny because neither Satoru nor Yuji have been interested in surfing. Or, at least haven’t mentioned it before. You’d expect something like this to come from Yuji, given his athleticism, but Satoru? It’s not unusual, but definitely kind of random.
Regardless, you are enjoying the secluded beach and the warm sun, so you indulge, even entertaining yourself by watching Yuji attempt to get Megumi on a surfboard. It isn’t really working.
“You gonna watch me catch the biggest wave out there?” Satoru asks, grinning as he takes his sunglasses off in favour of picking up one of the boards from the sand, wrapping the legrope around his ankle.
“I’ll be counting on it” You respond, catching the sunglasses he throws at you, waving as he tucks the board under his arm and jogs towards the blue ocean, whitewash lapping at the sand as his steps ripple in the water. He begins to paddle out, feet dangling off the tail of the surfboard. He still seems confident, and you do have to applaud that. Confidence is always an important thing when it comes to surfing.
You watch as Satoru begins to paddle for a wave, holding a hand over your eyes to block out the glare from the sun, He drops into the wave pretty smoothly. Your eyebrows raise slightly, thinking maybe you underestimated him. When Satoru stands up, the board nose-dives and you cringe as he gets dumped by the wave, watching as his surfboard gets flung into the air, still attached to him by the leg rope.
Yuji’s laugh echoes the beach as he watches Satoru get pummeled so brutally, doubling over and clutching his stomach when Satoru emerges from the water, looking similar to a drowned rat with his white hair covering his eyes, arms grasping at the water to avoid getting smashed by a wave again.
He drags himself and the surfboard inshore and crumples onto his back, coughing and panting. Slightly concerned, you kneel beside him, brows furrowed. “Are you alright?” You ask with a snort at his wet cat resemblance. Satoru glares at you slightly. “No” he groans, pulling the hair that’s plastered to his face away messily “I think I did something wrong.”
You snicker, raising an eyebrow at him as he pulls the velcro of the legrope off, huffing in the process. “You reckon?” you tease, patting his head. “You were standing too far forward on the board, I think.” Satoru gives you a skeptical look, but nods in a kind of agreement. “Probably..” he mumbles with a pout.
Glancing out towards the ocean, it does look rather inviting. Maybe you’ll go out. “Mind if I use the board?” you ask, pointing to the surfboard. He nods, handing you the legrope right as Yuji comes over, Megumi trailing behind. “You should’ve seen yourself just then!” Yuji is still giggling. “Your surfboard went like a metre up in the air! It was so funny.”
“Hey! It wasn’t that funny, I could've died!” Satoru turns to the boy. “But you didn’t!” Yuji points out.
“Maybe you should’ve” Megumi mumbles, a faint smile on his lips. Satoru gasps in dramaticised offense at his comment, earning more of a grin from Megumi. You hear some more bickering as you get further out into the water, paddling out smoothly.
The surf is a bit bigger than what would be ideal for a beginner, so you give Satoru some grace in that regard, but his wipeout was still too funny not to tease him for it. You probably could have taught him if he’d asked you, given you grew up with both your parents being big surfers, but Satoru never asked you about it and you couldn’t help yourself but to watch how he did on pure confidence and the knowledge from a kids movie alone.
To be fair, he did better than most.
Watching a wave begin to form in the distance, you lay down on the board and begin paddling, glancing over your shoulder at the approaching wall of water. You would’ve thought you’d be rusty but the wave is perfectly timed and you glide into it with ease, feeling the water's firm push on your board, you push up and stand to your feet as if it were second nature.
Planting your back foot against the tail of the board, you decide to show off a little, carving against the wave and doing a few twists and turns, before leaning back off the board and into the water as the wave starts to die out closer to shore.
When you paddle back in after a few more waves, the bickering has stopped and all three of them stare at you with wide eyes. Yuji is the first to speak. “Woah! That was so rad Miss Gojo-sensei’s girlfriend! How did you know how to do that?!” he exclaims in amazement, eyes practically sparkling as he looks at you. “My parents were surfers growing up” you shrug, smiling at Yuji’s utter excitement at what you view as a bland skill you happen to have.
“What?!” Satoru cuts in, voice echoing loudly around the empty beach. “What?” You repeat, confused.
“When were you going to mention you knew how to do this? After I embarrassed myself even further?” He scoffs, crossing his arms.
You shrug once more. “You never asked.”
Satoru rolls his eyes, huffing. “You’re more Cody than me, this is unacceptable,” He mumbles, glancing towards the waves. You sigh in exasperation at your boyfriend's antics, following his gaze towards the water. “I can teach you so you can fully embody Cody, how does that sound?”
His eyes light up and he snatches the board from you, rushing into the water before you can even blink. “Hey wait!” You call out, running into the water after him.
a/n: kinda random lil drabble, i've been surfing a lot more lately and i had some inspiration. first time writing Gojo, i hope he is not ooc, please don't kill me.
