A rare sighting of a Rocky Mountain Goat (oreamnos americanus) on the northern flank of Mt. Hood.
Overhunting eliminated Oregon’s natural population in the 1850s, and current populations are the result of reintroduction efforts. It’s estimated there are now ~1,000 mountain goats in the state. Their only predators being cougars and man.
Although I’ve spotted a few in the rugged mountains of Eastern Oregon, this is the first one I’ve seen in the Cascade Range, so close to Portland.
It’s a magnificent creature, and I’m thrilled to have shot it ... with a camera.
