The Window Cliffs are a series of #naturalarches along a knife-edge ridge in #PutnamCounty, #Tennessee. One hundred feet below is an oxbow meander where Cane Creek pinches in on the receding cliffs to create the ridge. The #geology of the #arches is Fort Payne Formation, a cherty limestone. The central portion of the rock is less resistant than the facies which acts as a caprock to the feature and ridge. Along the ridge are a few failed arches and a few proto-arches which let's the astute observer see the future and the past of the #WindowCliffs. Ultimately the ridge and arches will all collapse, and likely Cane Creek will cut itself off at the base of the ridge creating a cutoff meander. Window Cliffs is now a #statenaturalarea managed by nearby #BurgessFallsStatePark. The wind was blowing so hard we were both squinting to see—you know that wind that whips dirt and sand in behind your sunglasses? Others were grabbing at backpacks they left leaning up against rocks, wrapping their heads with blankets, hanging on for dear life (not quite literally). The painted landscape before us was invigorated by the pulsing wind. It was what many refer to as a “make-or-break” moment. It’s shocking how many come so close to the spectacular, only to be turned away by minor inconveniences. We shared a glorious moment with those who made the long walk to Delicate Arch despite the surging winds and stinging sand. We sat, backs pressed into the precipice, awaiting what would be a scattered sunset—a magnificent sight. The real fun began afterwards as we trekked back with headlamps and sparse trail markings.
